We’re back from two weeks off, and we’re ready to talk about a new company’s Fall internship offerings every day! Yes, it’s hard to look that far forward. We just passed the longest day of the year – it’s officially summer- and nobody wants to be thinking about fall quite yet. Well, nobody except the football fanatics. That’s why we’re going to start off by talking about NFL Teams and the internships that they’re offering for the Fall of 2008. We can’t think of a better way to get you in the right mindset.

The Landers Group

The Landers Group

This is essentially the same post that we posted about The Landers Group on One Day, One Job today. It’s important and applies to internships too, so make sure you read it.

One Day, One Internship is about helping college students find great internships. We’ve always taken this literally by featuring companies that look like great places to work (we can’t ever be 100% on this, but we do our best). Well, a big part of finding a great internship is avoiding the not so great (or really awful) internships that are out there, so, today, we are going to look at a company called The Landers Group, which has been identified as a scam by people online and in the media. As it gets later in the internship hunting season, many college students become desperate. It makes them easy prey for employment scams like those peddled by The Landers Group.

AVP

It is no wonder that I decided to play volleyball in college. After all, my parents met on the volleyball court, and my first toy was not a doll or a teddy bear, but it was a mini Molton volleyball too big to even fit in my hands. Upon graduation in a couple of weeks, I will officially be retired from college athletics. As I enter the working world in the fall, for the first time in my life, I will be forced to fit volleyball into my schedule, rather than fitting my schedule around volleyball. Unfortunately, in consulting “on the beach” means working out of the home office, where volleyball is not an approved activity. Had I known that volleyball could have been my work and my play, like it is for the AVP‘s interns, I may have decided on a different career path. It’s too bad One Day, One Internship wasn’t around during my internship search.

Your TV20

As it gets later and later in the internship hunting season, you need to change the focus of your internship search to more local possibilities. There are still opportunities to get an internship half way across the country, fly in for interview, land the job, and spend the summer in a new city, but they’re dwindling quickly. That type of hiring process just doesn’t work well in May for Summer internships. As disappointing as it may seem, you might have to spend the summer living with Mom and Dad. What kind of local options do you have? It depends where you live. One option that is available in many locales is interning for a local tv station. Most areas have some form of local station, and these stations can always use interns. It’s not as glamorous as interning for a major network, but the experience can be much more hands on. One example of a local television station that is still hiring Summer interns is Your TV20 in San Francisco.

Thrillist

Have you ever heard of Daily Candy? The girls are probably nodding their heads yes, and the boys are probably shaking their heads no. Well, Daily Candy is a daily e-mail list “from the front lines of fashion, food, and fun.” We’ve always wanted to write about their internships, but unfortunately we’ve never seen any listed (and we’re always watching). Thrillist is the manly man’s version of Daily Candy. You’ve already learned that it’s a lot easier to have someone find cool stuff for you – whether it be internships, restaurants, or clothes – than to look for yourself. That’s why companies like Thrillist and Daily Candy are thriving.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Logo

A few years ago, it became cool for companies to use the term “rock star” in reference to high potential applicants. As in, “We’re looking for a a rockstar PHP developer” or “She’s a total rockstar, we need to hire her.” Now everyone is saying it, and it’s lost its flare. Well, if there’s any entity that actually needs rock stars, it’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
