We were once again scanning Twitter for companies that are looking for Fall interns, and we came across a number of tweets regarding SHIFT Communications. That convinced us to take a look, and we’re pretty happy with what we found (although not happy that barely any companies are tweeting about Fall internships yet). SHIFT Communications is a tech PR firm located in Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA. Judging from their Twitter presence and the fact that they link to 3 of their blogs on their home page, they’re really up on this social media thing. Ok, we realize that today’s internships are going to sound a lot like yesterdays. While the Heritage Foundation identifies itself as a conservative thinktank, The Cato Institute considers itself more of a non-profit libertarian public policy research foundation. We usually wouldn’t repeat, but we were running down the list of Greg Mankiw approved internships, and Cato’s internship website blew us away. It’s fantastic. I’m kind of a nerd - I really like reading Economics blogs. So I was delighted to come a cross a a post about internships on Greg Mankiw’s Blog. He’s certainly one of my favorite Econ bloggers (and he’s a Harvard professor), so I value his internship recommendations quite highly. Unfortunately I came across his post when the deadlines had passed for Summer internships at many of the organizations he named. I made note of this, and now that we’re looking at Fall internships, I’ve decided to return to some of the ideas Dr. Mankiw shared. Today we’re going to look at The Heritage Foundation,

Great timing for this one. The Houston Astros are 37-42 and just released a player for choking their General Manager. Still, they are a Major League Baseball team, and they have a ton of Fall internships available. Despite the rough times that the team is going through, we doubt that they’ll have any effect on the quality of the internships experience. Sometimes stories are too good not to repeat. “The Birth of a Shoe Company” as told by Kenneth Cole is one of them.
Twenty years ago, I wanted to open a shoe company with limited money. From experience I knew one had to get in quickly because so often new companies run out of cash flow before they get the chance to conduct business. I also knew it was easier to get credit from factories in Europe who needed the business than from American banks that didn’t. So I lined up the factories, went to Europe, designed a collection of shoes, and returned to the states to sell them.
At the time, a shoe company had two options. You could get a room at the Hilton and become 1 of about 1100 shoe companies selling their goods. This didn’t provide the identity or image I felt necessary for a new company, and it cost a lot more money than I had to spend. The other way was to do what the big companies do and get a fancy showroom in Midtown Manhattan not far from the Hilton. More identity, much more money too.

I just found out that my car is on its last legs. It’s a ‘97 Ford Explorer, and I’ve loved it since I bought it as a senior in high school in 2001. These days American car manufacturers have a pretty weak reputation with consumers, but I was a happy customer. Unfortunately the decline in reputation has been part of the demise of the Big Three, and it’s seriously hurt the entire Michigan economy. That’s why you see these commercials with Jeff Daniels that try to sell businesses on a Michigan location. Armstrong White is exactly the type of company that is going to bring jobs back to Michigan. They have built a business in Bloomfield Hills, MI that directly serves the auto industry, but is also high tech and extremely innovative. No, they haven’t developed some sort of alternative energy technology. Ok, we’re going to stick it out for one more week on the Summer internship front. We know that there are still quite a few of you out there who haven’t landed an internship yet, but it’s getting really late. After this week, we’re planning to take two weeks off from writing about internships to recharge and reload (read: go fishing). When we come back, we will shift our focus to Fall internships. When I was 6 years old, my Mom and Dad thought it would be a great idea to take the train to Florida. We had been to Florida quite a few times before to visit Grandma and Grandpa, but always flew from a New York airport. For some reason my parents decided that the train was the way to go this time. Instead of 6 hours door to door, it was a solid 2 days, but it was actually a lot of fun. The most memorable part was coming into Washington, DC at night and seeing all of the monuments lit up. It was also on that trip that I finally got the hang of reading. I haven’t taken a long train trip since, but I will be doing so this Summer on my way to Quebec for a fishing trip. Although a train is slower, it’s also more comfortable, less of a hassle, and a nice change of pace. Yesterday we came across an article that included pictures of one of Earth’s last uncontacted tribes. It’s absolutely incredible to think that there are people out there who have absolutely no idea about what exists in the world outside of their society (you can be sure they don’t need to get internships). Even cooler is the fact that the rest of the world has almost no clue about them. The pictures were taken from an aircraft, which must have left these people totally freaked out. Their reaction was what anyone would do given the circumstances, they started shooting arrows at the plane. The article mentioned a non-profit organization called Survival International which protects these people from the encroachment. We immediately thought internships. Elevators are by definition awkward. We’re not talking about the design, which is actually one of the more elegant inventions in human history, but about the social aspects of being in an elevator. When you step in, you are forced to invade other people’s personal space. You don’t know whether to make small talk or to look forward and do nothing. If you’re in the back and need to get out, but there are people in front of you, it can be a struggle to not miss your floor. It’s generally an uncomfortable experience to step into an elevator (what if it fell? ahhhh), but millions of people have to do it every day to get where they live or work. Captivate Network hasn’t completely eliminated the awkwardness of elevator travel, but they have a product that makes the experience less awkward and delivers marketing messages to millions of people every day. When we heard the name Lime Energy, our first thought was of a lime battery (close relative of the more common lemon battery). Since they’re a company that is all about energy efficiency, they’re probably not proponents of running a building entirely off of lime power. Help us send a big thank you out to all of those who have ever served in the armed forces, while we remember those who are no longer with us. Conservation International

I grew up in suburban Connecticut, but I spent a lot time outdoors, both around my house and in more wild places. During my childhood I rarely saw deer, turkeys, coyotes, or hawks. Only a few times did I ever hear or see a woodpecker. Seeing wildlife was special. As I got older that began to change. I see all of the above relatively often now, and I swear that I hear a woodpecker banging away every day now. I definitely consider this a victory for local conservationists who have worked hard to save and bring back wildlife habitats; however, I also know that many species of flora and fauna are still in danger across the world. Conservation International is an organization whose mission statement should be “saving life on Earth.” Instead they have chosen the slightly less terse:
We believe that the Earth’s natural heritage must be maintained if future generations are to thrive spiritually, culturally, and economically. Our mission is to conserve the Earth’s living heritage – our global biodiversity – and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature.

One Day, One Internship is about helping college students find great internships. We’ve always taken this literally by featuring companies that look like great places to work (we can’t ever be 100% on this, but we do our best). We’re not saying that the Summer opportunities that are available in late (yes, the 22nd is late) May are necessarily of lower quality, but it’s like a Black Friday Sale - the good stuff usually goes fast (and the best internship programs usually do their hiring months in advance). Wild Waves Theme Park

As we continue to help you in your hunt for last minute internships, you need to remember that our daily posts are just jumping off points for your internship hunt. Just because the company that we feature isn’t near where you live or isn’t in the industry that you want to work in doesn’t mean that you should pass over it. Think about similar companies or fields and use the ideas that you come up with to formulate your own internship search plan. For instance, we are looking at internships at Wild Waves Theme Park in Federal Way, WA today. There may not be a ton of you out there who live near Wild Waves, but there’s a good chance that many of you live a commutable distance from a theme park. Use the job search techniques that we’ve taught you and see if you can find an internship at your local theme park.
Wet and Wild Internships
Whether you’re looking for summer jobs or internships, theme parks are a great place to look because they’re always hiring college students. Theme parks are generally large operations, so there’s more to working for them than taking tickets, selling hot dogs, or dressing up as a character in a costume that is 140 degrees on the inside. Wild Waves Theme Park is looking for interns in Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Food Service, Information Technology, and Retail. The only specific information that we could find about individual internships were job postings for their IT Internship, Marketing Internship, and Finance Internship. From those postings you can apply directly for the internships. We’re not quite sure if the other internships are still available, as they’re not listed in Wild Waves’ job openings, so your best bet is to fill out a general application and to state your desired internship. You could also try calling 253-661-8027, which appears to be the phone number for their HR office.

One year, my cousin gave me a subscription to MAD Magazine for my birthday. I had never read an issue before, but I definitely recognized their icon Alfred E. Neuman. I didn’t think that I’d get that into it, but every month I’d look forward to getting the latest issue in the mail. Most of the jokes probably went over my head, because I was about 12 years old at the time, but I’d sit there and read and laugh. The only way you’re going to understand what MAD is all about is to pick up an issue, so head out to your nearest magazine rack and get one if you’d like to put your sense of humor to work this summer. Chicago Botanic Garden

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured internships at a botanical garden, but we thought it was time to reach out to those plant science and botany majors again. It must have crossed our mind when we realized that spring is in full force at One Day, One Job Headquarters. Everything has bloomed, and not only is it beautiful here, but it also smells great. Whenever we open a door or window we get a fragrant burst of springtime. Since we hear from a lot of people that we focus too much on internships in New York and California (hey, that’s where a lot of them are), the addition of the Chicago Botanic Garden to our list of companies and organizations that hire interns should be welcome.
