It is no wonder that I decided to play volleyball in college. After all, my parents met on the volleyball court, and my first toy was not a doll or a teddy bear, but it was a mini Molton volleyball too big to even fit in my hands. Upon graduation in a couple of weeks, I will officially be retired from college athletics. As I enter the working world in the fall, for the first time in my life, I will be forced to fit volleyball into my schedule, rather than fitting my schedule around volleyball. Unfortunately, in consulting “on the beach” means working out of the home office, where volleyball is not an approved activity. Had I known that volleyball could have been my work and my play, like it is for the AVP‘s interns, I may have decided on a different career path. As for internships, it’s getting harder every day to find quality opportunities to write about, but we’re planning sticking with posting about opportunities for this Summer for at least a few more weeks. As it gets later and later in the internship hunting season, you need to change the focus of your internship search to more local possibilities. There are still opportunities to get an internship half way across the country, fly in for interview, land the job, and spend the summer in a new city, but they’re dwindling quickly. That type of hiring process just doesn’t work well in May for Summer internships. As disappointing as it may seem, you might have to spend the summer living with Mom and Dad. What kind of local options do you have? It depends where you live. One option that is available in many locales is interning for a local tv station. Most areas have some form of local station, and these stations can always use interns. It’s not as glamorous as interning for a major network, but the experience can be much more hands on. When you’re in a new place, like a city where you’re interning for the summer, you need help finding your way around. Things like restaurants, hotels (for your parents when they visit), nightlife, movies, music, golf, shopping and other entertainment resources can be difficult to figure out. There are a lot of reviews online, but the quality of such reviews is often questionable. You never know who is writing them and what their personal tastes are. That’s why resources like Zagat are so essential to making the most of your stay in a new place. They have over 250,000 surveyors helping them produce the highest quality content for print and the web. A Zagat review is a review that you can trust. Happy Mother’s Day! We’re not sure how many moms we have reading, but we know of at least a few. If you haven’t told your mom about us, why don’t you? She’d probably be thrilled to help you with your internship search. We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but we only write about non-profit internships on the weekends, and we like to run with holiday themes. This combination provided especially troubling today, for there aren’t nearly as many Mom-related non-profits out there as you would think there are. From the ones that we could find, very few had any sort of internship opportunities. We persisted in our search and found the Crittenton Women’s Union, a non-profit organization in the Boston area, that “transforms the course of low-income women’s lives so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for themselves and their families.” They turned up on an Idealist search for the word “mother,” so we’re going with it.
The Crittenton Women’s Union’s domain name is LiveWorkThrive.org, which is quite fitting for an organization that supports low-income women through advocacy, education, family support services, housing, research, and workforce development. Here’s more on what the Crittenton Women’s Union does. You should also take a look at the Voice Project Blog for deeper insights about how the Crittenton Women’s Union is empowering women to create social change. In fact, the organization’s entire website is fantastic and should be able to answer any questions that you might have before you consider interning with them.
Crittenton Women’s Union is currently offering 7 different Summer internships including the following opportunities: Healthy Families Intern, FLASH Intern, Assessment Center Case Management Intern, Horizons Housing Program Intern, Hastings House Administrative Intern, Marketing / Communications Intern, Research Assistant Intern. All opportunities are unpaid, located in Brighton, MA or in the greater Boston area, and have an application deadline of June 2nd. Fellowship Programs are the new big thing for college graduates. There are quite a few highly competitive programs like Teach for America, New York City Teaching Fellows, and The New Teacher Project that focus on turning new college grads into teachers in low-income public schools. What about coaching? Athletics has become significantly linked to education in America, and it is also one of the few areas where low-income schools can be on par with their well funded counterparts. Sounds to us like there’s an opportunity to initiate change there. Coaches often seem more accessible to students than teachers are, so why not put the same types of young leaders that are being recruited as teachers in coaching positions at high needs schools and see what happens? With the amount that the word “green” is thrown around these days, you’d think there are a lot of envious people out there. Maybe there are, but that’s not what it’s all about. It’s about being Irish. Just kidding. It’s about the environment. There’s still a ton of debate about how far we need to go to with environmentalism, but it’s hard to argue against improving efficiency and sustainability. Green Options is a blog network that is focused on the “need for innovative solutions to our (the world’s) problems.” They say that they’re “not treehuggers or hippies per se,” but that they “believe market-based solutions are the key to reaching true sustainability.” We second them on market-based solutions! I’ve been through a lot with my Columbia jacket. I first bought it for a high school “team building” trip that included a hike up a mountain in November. I was on the hefty side back then, so the hike was quite a trying task. By the time I reached the summit, I was a bit overheated to say the least. The jacket came off, and I enjoyed the much easier hike on the way down not realizing that my brand new jacket was still at the top of the mountain. I thought my Mom was going to kill me, because going back up to get it was not an option. Luckily a guide from another group grabbed the jacket and brought it down for me. That was almost 10 years ago (which is really scary, by the way I feel old and I’m only 23). Since then I’ve used the jacket to slide down snowy hills on my stomach on the way back from class and sneak fish into the Cornell-Harvard hockey game. The jacket is still in great shape, and goes to show that Columbia Sportswear Company makes one hell of a product.
Besides the fact that I like Columbia for their great jackets, Performance Fishing Gear, and Reel Stories videos, I also like them for their Chairman of the Board, Gertrude Boyle. She is the star of many of Columbia’s television ads, where she is best known as “one tough mother.” Columbia is run by the family that started it, but they are now publicly traded, which means that the investor relations section of their website offers a plethora of material to research. It’s pretty amazing that the whole company was started by a couple who fled Germany for Portland, Oregon and bought a hat distributorship.
Although Columbia makes great sportswear, they don’t know how to put together a decent Careers site. Or maybe we should say that Taleo, their Applicant Tracking System provider, doesn’t know how to put together a decent Careers site. Either way, all Columbia has is a job search function and a list of benefits. The most frustrating thing is that their job search function only turns up one of their internships, when we’ve found 4 by digging a little deeper.
You knew there was a reason that you subscribed. It’s probably because we find the internships that you would never find. A search for “internships” on Columbia’s Careers site turns up one listing (while a search for “intern” turns up none). The easy to find internship is in Apparel Sourcing. The saving grace is that Columbia has an RSS feed for job search results, so if you search all jobs and then click the RSS feed, you can find a couple more internship listings. We found two internships (here and here) in Industrial Engineering at their Distribution Center. The last internship that we found is not listed on their website, but was posted yesterday on a closed job board that we have access to. It is in Promotions, and is perfect for someone with an interest in Marketing or Public Relations, as long as it’s still available (if you’d like more details about this internship, leave a comment with your real e-mail address in the e-mail box – nobody can see it but us). We also found a now defunct listing from 4 days ago about a Footwear Internship, but we couldn’t find any more details about it. All of Columbia’s internships are located in Portland, OR.
Despite Columbia’s lackluster career site and relatively boring descriptions on their internship postings, we still think they’re a pretty cool company. They’re worth a look, especially now that it’s May.

We just want you to realize the sad reality that if you don’t get motivated and start working to find an internship today, you might spend the summer on the couch instead of in the office. As character building as sitting on the couch is, it’s not the type of work experience that is going to look good on your resume when you need to apply for jobs after graduation. You can’t even call it “traveling.” So instead of making an impression in the seat cushions of your couch, you should be making an impression in a real work environment. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Now I’ve never celebrated before, but I’m pretty excited to give it a go. I did a little research (yes, those skills that we’re teaching you also help when you need to find semi-useful facts) and found that Cinco de Mayo is, in fact, a minor holiday in Mexico, but has become much celebrated in many areas north of the border. This article from the Albuquerque Tribune does a nice job of telling the history, and includes this quote from Jeffrey Candelaria, vice president of membership and marketing at the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce: “From my perspective as a marketing professional, Cinco de Mayo has morphed into a national holiday designed by Fifth Avenue to sell alcohol and excite consumership around a party-type theme.” Well, party-type themes are fun, especially if classes are over for you, so we’re going to run with it and talk about internships at Party City today. There is a constant struggle that almost all non-profits endure – it’s organizing people. Whether they are rounding up volunteers, reaching out to donors, hiring employees, or putting together a leadership team, non-profits rely on well managed groups of people to enact change. About two months ago over at One Day, One Job, we wrote an article about finding jobs by watching tv. You shouldn’t be surprised that we practice what we preach and use the tube for internship searching as well. We’re big fans of Top Chef and watch its new episodes every week. We like it because we learn new cooking techniques, but also because it’s a reality show that rewards people for being talented, not for being jerks. Though we sometimes completely zone out in front of the tv, we do our best to pay attention and keep an eye out for internship ideas. The most recent episode of Top Chef featured Common Threads, a non-profit organization that educates children on the importance of nutrition and physical well-being and fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity through cooking. Today I’m posting from Cornell University, because I’ve returned to my alma mater for Slope Day. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s Cornell’s version of Spring Weekend. It’s the last day of classes, so everyone skips out, goes to a big hill on campus, and behaves as you’d expect they would during a campus-wide party. It’s definitely important to check your privacy settings before posting Slope Day pics on Facebook. We first found Better World Books when we were looking for non-profits jobs to write about for One Day, One Job (in case you were wondering, here are non-profit internships). We quickly realized that they weren’t a non-profit, but a “for profit social venture.” That means that Better World Books operates with the goal of profitability, but they donate all profits to non-profit organizations such as Books for Africa, Room to Read, and the National Center for Family Literacy. At the time that this post is set to publish, I should be off to my first softball game of the Spring, unless we get rained out (which is unfortunately looking likely). Now, I consider my Sunday morning softball games to be an “educational experience,” but the truth of the matter is that my team consists mostly of dirty old men who are 20-40 years my senior, and all I learn from them are new ways to insult people and other forms of colorful language. Still, Sunday softball is a good way to keep me off the streets and out of trouble. Harlem RBI does the same thing for inner-city kids, while also offering educational programs. “Many Burton employees will snag freshies first thing in the morning before coming in to work during the winter.” Being non “riders,” we’re don’t know a whole lot about snowboarding, but we can be pretty sure that interns at Burton’s Burlington, VT office probably won’t have this luxury. This post is going to be a bit painful for some of you, especially if you’re a fan of the New England Patriots or the Memphis Tigers (or any other team that has recently failed in a Championship game). Why would a post about a “Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice” hurt someone’s feelings? Because World Vision is the organization that is responsible for donating the Championship paraphernalia that was produced for teams that didn’t win a championship. Maybe you’re a political junkie and love watching the mud fly, but we’ve been sick of this election since it’s started. Little tiny details get blown out of proportion, and things that should be a big deal are often ignored. The media is constantly measuring and analyzing the effect of these mini-controversies on voter sentiment by loosely interpreting poll data to fit their pre-conceived notions. We must be alone in our political fatigue, because the appetite for up to the second information appears to be constantly growing.
