I’m not going to start an Economics debate on a Saturday morning, but I’m tempted. Trickle Up is a non-profit organization that was named as a slap in the face to the theory of trickle-down economics. Regardless of their economic philosophy, they appear to be doing great work by empowering “people living on less than $1 a day to take the first steps out of poverty, providing them with resources to build microenterprises for a better quality of life.” Trickle Up is based out of New York City, and they believe strongly in microfinance, micropreneurship, and microenterprises as being the solution to worldwide poverty. Their website does a great job of telling their story, so I recommend that you check it out to get a full feel for whom Trickle Up helps and how they do it.

Hot 97

I think it was 6th or 7th grade when I started listening to Hip Hop. It started out with a few CD purchases, but soon enough I was listening to Hot 97 at every free moment. That included car rides with my parents. I still can’t believe that my parents drove around town with me sitting in the front seat ensuring that radio was dialed in to 97.1, but they let me get away with it. I’m sure that they weren’t too happy about it, but I guess that’s part of having kids. Anyway, Hot 97 is still my go to radio station when I’m back in the NYC metro area, and it still seems to be one of the most respected Hip Hop and R&B radio stations in the country. There’s not much more that I can say about them, so let’s take a look at their internships.

If there’s ever a time to intern at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, it is now. What’s the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency? It’s a bureau of the the U.S. Department of the Treasury that was chartered in 1863 to ensure a safe and sound national banking system for all Americans. How do they do that? They have a nationwide staff that “conducts on-site reviews of national banks and provides sustained supervision of bank operations. The agency issues rules, legal interpretations, and corporate decisions concerning banking, bank investments, bank community development activities, and other aspects of bank operations.” I think that it’s pretty obvious why the OCC has become a lot busier in the past couple of years. So instead of worrying about how there will be no jobs in finance when you graduate, you should see if you can land an internship with one of the government agencies that is dealing with our banking problems head on.

Having a girlfriend who is a consultant, I’m often subjected to hours of consultant-speak. It’s not really English, as it consists mostly of acronyms. One thing consultants seem to talk about a lot, even though they don’t have an acronym for it, is the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card. It’s apparently by far the best credit card for the consulting lifestyle (especially when you work for a firm that almost exclusively puts you up in Starwood hotels). Since I’ve been hearing the Starwood name a lot, and I’ve had a few people recommend their Jobs to me, I thought it was time to take a look at what kind of entry level jobs are available with one of the world’s largest hotel and leisure companies. In case you’re not familiar with the Starwood brand, they’re the company behind Sheraton, Four Points, aloft, W Hotels, Le Meridien, The Luxury Collection, Element, Westin, and St. Regis. All of them are nice places to stay, and a few of them are about as trendy as you can get when it comes to hotels – check out aloft.

Unless you go to see fewer movies than I do, then you know about Dreamworks. On the animation side they’ve done Shrek, Antz, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and more. On the film side they’ve done Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, American Beauty, Gladiator, Old School, Transformers, and many more. They make great movies, and they’ve been very successful. It’s no surprise considering they were started by media moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. If you don’t recognize their logo, then you probably shouldn’t be looking for a internship in the entertainment industry. An internship at DreamWorks is a dream come true for many college students, so let’s look at how you can land one.

Today’s company definitely qualifies as cool. You may have never heard of Moosejaw, but the outdoor apparel manufacturer’s customer base is insanely loyal. They sell via retail, catalog, and online, and Every day they get rave reviews and customer photo submissions. Maybe it’s because Moosejaw has really good looking models, or maybe it’s the fact that Moosejaw offers homework help and dating advice to their customers. We’re not really sure what it is, but they’ve got their niche figured out. We waited a long time to write about entry level jobs at Moosejaw, and we’ve had to wait 9 months longer for them to post internships, but they finally have.

Happy New Year’s Eve! Today we’re going to take a look at some internships that couldn’t be more intertwined with New Year’s Eve. Times Square Alliance is a non-profit organization that “works to improve and promote Times Square – cultivating the creativity, energy and edge that have made the area an icon of entertainment, culture and urban life for over a century.” Times Square for New Year’s Eve isn’t on my list of things to do, but for many people it’s a big deal. I’m sure that there will be millions of people there tonight, so why not use tonight’s celebration to generate ideas for your internship search in the New Year. Somehow the Coca-Cola brand has been indelibly tied to the image of Santa Claus. In fact, there’s even an urban legend that the modern image of Santa Claus was created by The Coca-Cola Company. It’s not true, but the fact that many people believe it to be true speaks volumes about Coca-Cola’s branding prowess (dating all the way back to the 1930s). We considered a lot of Christmas themed companies to feature today, but we keep coming back to the image of St. Nick sipping on a glass bottle of Coke. Let’s see how you can find a job with Coke.

Safe Horizon

I’m back home for the holidays, and I hope most of you now are too. It’s wonderful to always have a safe place to go back to, but not everyone is so lucky. Victims of crime and abuse often don’t have anywhere to go. They’re often left with the choice of living in terror in a place that is familiar yet unsafe, or facing total uncertainty. Safe Horizon is a non-profit organization whose mission “is to provide support, prevent violence, and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families, and communities.” They run 80 programs which “are located throughout the five boroughs of New York City in court houses, police precincts, schools, shelters, and community offices.” They may not be able to provide a safe place to go for all 350,000 victims whom they work with each year, but they find a way to support these people until they can find their way to a safe horizon.

Slow Food USA

Have you ever heard of the slow food movement? Despite what it might sound like, it’s not about eating snails, turtles, and sloths. The slow food movement about envisioning “a word in which all people can eat food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it and good for the planet,” or as USA Today puts it, “slow food aims to everything that fast food is not.” As delicious as Chicken McNuggets are, I have to say that fresh, locally grown produce usually comes out ahead for me. Slow Food USA is a non-profit organization based in Brooklyn, NY that is working to grow the slow food movement and “to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system.” I wish I could tell you more about what their strategy is to accomplish this, but their 5 Year Strategic Plan is “coming soon.”

Not only is it Friday, but it’s also a Snow Day here in Chicago! Judging from the map on The Weather Channel, there’s a good chance that you’re enjoying a Snow Day too. My favorite thing to do when school was cancelled was to go sledding, and I haven’t outgrown it yet. If downtown Chicago had a single decent hill, I’d be there as soon as I finish writing this. Of course, I’d have to stop and buy a sled first. In college it’s easy – you just “borrow” a tray from the dining hall, and that’s your sled for the winter, but when you’re an adult you need to take things a little more seriously. That’s why Hammerhead Sleds exists. They make sleds for big kids. Actually, that’s an understatement. They make the most bad ass sleds that I have ever seen. These sleds aren’t cheap, though. They run $349, but they sure look worth it.

Most internship application processes seem like contests – you apply and you find out if you’ve won. The only problem is that the prize is often an unpaid gig getting coffee and sitting in a cubicle doing menial tasks. We try to avoid talking about those kinds of internships here, but it’s hard to know what an internship is really like without actually doing it. So, how about an internship where winning is actually winning? STA Travel is currently making a big deal about their 2009 World Traveler Internship Program. They’re looking for multiple interns to “traverse the globe experiencing a number of travel adventures and showcasing their experiences daily via a journal/blog, video and podcasts.” It might not offer the best real world work experience, but it makes up for it with life experience and awesomeness. If you haven’t heard of them already, STA Travel is world’s largest student travel agency. They want to improve students’ lives by making it easy and cost effective for them to travel, and these internships tie right in with that goal.

The AbsolutePunk.net forum has come through again! It’s probably one of the last web sites that I would ever visit, except it’s an awesome resource for finding music related internships. I’m not sure why, but they always seem to get the inside scoop on internships that I can’t find anywhere else. Yesterday they posted an internship with Big Picture Media, a full-service public relations agency that focuses on the music and entertainment industry. They’re based in New York City, and they’re a relatively small agency from what I can tell, but they certainly look like a cool place to intern.

Event marketing seems to be an area where a lot of internships end up being more like scams than internships. The reason is that event marketing internships are in high demand, so shady companies use ads for them to catch lots of candidates. There’s a reason that these types of internships are in high demand, and we think we’ve found some that exemplify the positive qualities of internships in event and experiential marketing. They’re with All Terrain, a Chicago-based event marketing firm. We first found out about them through Twitter, and did some more research to see what they’re all about. They’ve worked with top clients to do some pretty cool promotions. They even provide case studies on their website, which is a great thing to look for if you’re trying to determine the legitimacy of a company. There’s no better way to get a feel for a company than to take a look at the work that they’ve done and whom they’ve done it with.

It’s amazing to think that a publication started by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., and James Russell Lowell in 1857 is still kicking. The Atlantic has morphed from a focus on literary and cultural affairs to more broadly attacking the topics of foreign affairs, politics, economics, and cultural trends. It has also joined forces with National Journal and Government Executive to form Atlantic Media. Their publications are a little more advanced than Highlights and Mad Magazine, which is why a recent rebranding effort was probably necessary. Appealing to people’s intellectual sides just isn’t the best way to sell magazines, unfortunately. With lots of changes going on at Atlantic Media, and National Journal Group’s political trade journals still bringing money, now might be an interesting time to consider interning with Atlantic Media.

The Wilderness Society

For me the wilderness is central to life itself – I can’t be happy without time spent outdoors. That doesn’t mean that I’m not enjoying life in downtown Chicago, but I plan on spending lots of time in the woods and rivers of Wisconsin and Michigan once Spring starts to show its face. My philosophy is shared by the people at The Wilderness Society. Their About page says that “It is our calling and our passion to protect America’s wilderness, not as a relic of our nation’s past, but as a thriving ecological community that is central to life itself.” I couldn’t agree more. They’re a non-profit organization that provides “scientific, economic, legal and policy guidance to land managers, communities, local conservation groups and state and federal decision-makers” to “ensure the best management of our lands – national forests, parks and refuges, as well as public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management.” I’ve seen one of my favorite places in the world (a Northern Michigan tract of wilderness and quality fishing areas) put at risk by poor land management policies that would have allowed natural gas drilling in an extremely sensitive area, so I know how firsthand how vital The Wilderness Society’s work is.

I was just browsing the news this morning when I came across the story of how Bernard Madoff, a prominent Wall Street trader, allegedly admitted to defrauding investors in his hedge fund of $50 billion. It is an unbelievable amount of money, and it’s hard to believe that anyone would go through the effort and risk to steal that much money – I can’t even fathom what you would do with $50 billion in illegally acquired money. The most outrageous part of the story might be that Madoff has been released on $10 million bail. That’s peanuts for him. It’s .02% of what he allegedly stole. After reading this story I started browsing non-profits for today’s post, and I came across the Vera Institute of Justice. It’s a New York City based organization with locations in Washington, DC and New Orleans, and it was founded when “philanthropist Louis Schweitzer and magazine editor Herb Sturz recognized the injustice of a bail system in New York City that granted liberty based on income.” Today’s story about Madoff is a perfect example of this injustice.

I think that I’ve told you before that I don’t listen to a lot of music, and I stopped reading about music a long time ago. That means that I’m not very familiar with Pitchfork, but from what I hear, they’re a “a Chicago-based daily Internet publication devoted to music criticism and commentary, music news, and artist interviews.” That came from Wikipedia, because Pitchfork has somehow forgotten to include an About page on their site. Ok, so Pitchfork isn’t just about music. It’s about indie music – mostly indie rock but also “electronic, pop, hip hop, dance, folk, jazz, metal, and experimental music.” Beyond the daily e-zine that they publish, Pitchfork has also recently launched Pitchfork.tv, their take on online tv.

We’ll be announcing the winner of the HP Magic Giveaway later today on the One Day, One Job blog, so be sure to come back to see who won. Now that the contest is over, I’m digging out from under the the 1,000+ e-mails that I’ve received relating to this contest. I’ve come across a number of requests for me to feature certain companies, so I’m going to oblige our fans and start by focusing on PricewaterhouseCoopers and their internships today. In case you’re not familiar with PwC, you should know that they “provide industry-focused assurance, tax, and advisory services to build public trust and enhance value for clients and their stakeholders.” In other words they work with the biggest companies (seriously) in the world to keep things running smoothly on the back end. In fact, PricewaterhouseCoopers is the third largest privately owned organization in the US, so it makes sense that other large companies trust them. PwC is one of the Big Four (auditors), which means that they’re doing a lot better than the Big Three (auto manufacturers). That doesn’t mean that they’re not feeling the recession, but they still seem to have a very active recruiting presence. Unfortunately my cable package doesn’t come with BBC America, so I can’t watch the British version of Chef Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (it has a lot more swearing than the American version), and I can’t watch Top Gear. I’ve actually never seen Top Gear, so I don’t know a lot about it, but it seems to be a tv show about cars with quite a cult following. It’s apparently wildly popular in the UK, and it’s also one of the world’s most pirated television shows according to Wikipedia. This popularity has spawned American and Australian versions, and the word is that the American version might end up on NBC this spring.

I’ve said it before, and I’m going to keep saying it. Newspapers are in trouble, and interning with a newspaper that is stuck in the pre-Internet world is a waste of time. You’ll be learning skills that are quickly becoming obsolete. Social media is the future of news, but an internship with some blog may not be the reputable resume item that you’re looking to add to your resume. So what do you do? You find a newspaper that gets it – one that is embracing the future of news on the web wholeheartedly. A good example is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, better known as STLtoday.com on the web. They seem to have some pretty cool internship offerings that will help you build skills that will still be useful when you graduate and need to look for a job (things are seriously moving that fast these days).

If you’ve seen our contest for the HP Magic Giveaway called Bringing Magic to Your Job Search, you know that random acts of kindness are sometimes rewarded handsomely. It was probably Third Grade when I first heard the term “random acts of kindness,” as we were celebrating Random Acts of Kindness week. I remember making a big chain of construction paper links that each had a random act of kindness that one of my classmates or I had done. It was kind of hokey, but it got the point across. Construction paper might be for kids, but random acts of kindness are for everyone. You should never outgrow them, and that’s what the RAKE Project, a Washington, DC based non-profit, is preaching. Their founders are anonymous (although you’ll probably meet them if you score an internship), as they consider themselves part of the “working poor,” so they’ve started this organization to offer “emergency fund relief to working middle class people.”

WGBH

We’ve catered to the PBS junkies before – we’ve covered internships at PBS and at WTTW11 in Chicago – and we’re going to do it again today. WGBH is a non-profit PBS affiliate based out of Boston that also happens to be the “single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming.” They started out by broadcasting the Boston Symphony Orchestra over the radio in 1951, but they’ve expanded to television and the web since. It’s really amazing how much of PBS’s programing comes out of WGBH. One of my all-time favorites was ZOOM, which is a little embarrassing to admit, since I was a bit old to be watching it at the time. Another interesting thing about WGBH that I picked up from Wikipedia is that they’re “considered a leader in services for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or visually impaired.” WGBH actually “invented television closed captioning, audio description (Descriptive Video Service), and created the Rear Window Captioning System for films.” As you can see, WGBH is an innovator not just in public television, but in all media, and probably a great place to work.

In case you haven’t already noticed, we announced the beginning of our part of the HP Magic Giveaway contest today. HP has given us $6,000 worth of their products to give away, and we’re giving them all away to one lucky winner. We thought that it would be cool to take a look at HP’s internships on the same day that the contest launches, but we had an internal debate over whether we should label it a sponsored post or include it with the rest of our posts. The contest is all about paying it forward, and since we haven’t received any compensation from HP for the contest (nor have we had any communication with HP’s HR department either), we thought that we’d send some goodwill back their way by featuring their internship. Sorry to muddy up the post with this, but I wanted to make sure that we’re staying transparent.

I’m a Mac guy, so when I think about HP, I think about Hewlett-Packard and the clunky PCs that they used to make. Things have changed. They now mostly go by the name HP, and their computers are anything but stodgy. I have an office full of their products (until I have to send them to one of you), and I’m extremely impressed by how innovative they are. Their “technology solutions,” as they like to call them, really stand out from the crowd. I’m also impressed with HP’s approach to social media and buzz marketing. They understand that old media is dying and that they need to find a new way to market their products. What’s better than giving out products to bloggers to review and then having those bloggers giveaway the products during the holiday season? The success of the promotion is yet to be determined, but you have to like the prospect of working for a company that is willing to make a huge investment in trying something new.

They’ve been around since 2003, and they’re now doing 4.6 million pageviews a month. That’s a lot. Gothamist isn’t just a blog, though. It’s also a company that manages quite a few other blogs including Chiagoist, LAist, DCist, SFist, Austinist, Bostonist, Houstonist, Phillyist, Seattleist, Londonist, Sampaist, Shanghaiist, and Torontoist. I usually roll my eyes at “stealth stage” startups. It’s not that I doubt that they have something really cool up their sleeves; it’s just that I don’t fully understand the obsession with keeping an idea secret. It’s a lot harder to build a business when you can’t tell people what you’re doing, and as Howard Aiken said, “Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.” With that said, I’m still really intrigued by what Invite Media is up to. They’re a Philadelphia based startup that is putting “some of the top statistical minds” to work analyzing and optimizing online display advertising. That’s about all that they’ll share, but it sounds fascinating.

My mother sent me to Ballroom Dancing School in 4th and 5th grade. My friends and I called it “Monday Night Karate” at school to avoid being made fun of, but every monday night we got dressed up in a jacket and tie and had to act prim and proper and say things like, “Good evening Mrs. Jones. It’s a pleasure to see you again.” At least I didn’t have to wear white gloves like the girls did. The real goal of the weekly class was to teach us manners, but you would think that I would have learned a step or two. I didn’t. I am a terrible dancer, so I’m probably not the best person to tell you about Dancing in the Streets, a NYC based non-profit organization that “strives to illuminate the urban experience with free public performances and site-specific installations that examine the kinetic life and history of natural and architectural public spaces,” but I’m going to tell you about them anyway.
