I don’t know about you, but my stomach still hurts a little bit from eating too much on Thanksgiving. Hunger should be the last thing on my mind, but as I think about how lucky we are to have a holiday that is all about stuffing our faces, I can’t forget that the first Thanksgiving was preceded by meager times. The Pilgrims faced a lot of suffering and starvation before they got to celebrate a Thanksgiving, and, unfortunately, there are many people in this world who still continue to battle hunger. Action Against Hunger is a New York City based non-profit organization that hopes to change this by “providing innovative solutions to battle hunger.” They work across five continents in five program areas (Nutrition, Water & Sanitation, Food Security, Health, and Advocacy). They’re doing excellent work, and they also appear to have an excellent internship program.

Happy Black Friday! May you not get in a fist fight over a discounted video game system or flat screen tv. Today is the official start of the holiday shopping season, and legend has it that it is also the first day of the year that major retailers “go into the black.” For those of you not familiar with accounting terminology, that means that they finally become profitable. Whether or not this is true depends on the retailer, but you have to wonder why a store wouldn’t just open up for November and December and sit dormant the rest of the year if it’s really that bad. Today, instead of looking at jobs in retail, we’re going to go the other way and look at a major accounting firm, Ernst & Young. They might not be the first company that you think of on Black Friday, but you can be sure that they spend a lot of time analyzing the results. And, of course, they hire a ton of interns.

Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for reading! One Day, One Internship wasn’t even around yet last Thanksgiving, but on One Day, One Job we talked about jobs at Plimoth Plantation and Colonial Williamsburg. Those are still a great option if you want to be reminded of Thanksgiving every day when you’re at work, but this year we’re going to take the easy way out and talk about turkey. I was first introduced to Jennie-O when I tried some of their turkey bacon. It’s good, if you haven’t had real bacon in a while. Since my Thanksgiving cooking philosophy is that bacon makes everything better (especially when it’s put on top of the turkey and doused in maple syrup, seriously, try it), I’ll let Jennie-O provide the turkey, but I’m getting the bacon somewhere else. In the three or four years that I’ve been familiar with the Jennie-O brand, I’ve noticed that they’ve revved up their branding efforts. You’ve probably seen some of their tv commercials, which are pretty funny, but you may have overlooked the fact that they’re working hard to expand recognition of their employment brand with college students.

Since Thanksgiving is tomorrow, I have cooking on my mind. I’m trying to make sure that I have everything that I need, because Thanksgiving Day always comes with some essential ingredient or cooking implement missing. A run to the store for an ingredient usually isn’t a problem, but a meat thermometer or baster can be a little tougher to find. That’s why you might want to make a day before Thanksgiving stop by Williams-Sonoma, and while you’re at it, you might want to think about whether they offer internships. In case you’re not familiar with Williams-Sonoma, they’re “the premier specialty retailer of home furnishings in the United States.” Their brands include Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, PB Teen, Williams-Sonoma Home, and West Elm, and they “cover every room in the house: from the kitchen to the living room, bedroom, home office, and even the hall closet.” Williams-Sonoma, the brand, is best known for kitchen wares, which is why I associate them with Thanksgiving.

I’m not going to stop harping on the fact that the future of media is online, and that any journalism student who wants to get hired right out of college needs to be familiar with the “new media.” ReadWriteWeb is a perfect example of new media. It’s a “blog that provides Web Technology news, reviews and analysis,” and it’s the world’s 14th most linked to blog according to Technorati. I used to be an avid reader of hip hop magazines and online hip hop message boards, but ever since free music for all days of Napster ended, I’ve lost interest in keeping up to date on music in general. I’d imagine that many of you have also had declining interest in music as you’ve been in college, although I have to say that the presence of hip hop on college campuses and in all of pop culture seems to continue to rise. Is hip hop bucking the general trend? I can’t answer that, but maybe the staff over at XXL Magazine can. Back when I was fiend for all of the latest hip hop news, they were one of my favorite sources, although not The Source, for news. I haven’t picked up an issue in well over half a decade, but judging from XXL’s website, they continue to cover “hip hop on a higher level.”

Do you look at the labels on all of the food that you buy? Not only the nutritional facts but also the ingredients? If you answered yes, then you’re probably a health conscious consumer, or maybe you have a specific food allergy. Well what about the stuff that’s in your food that isn’t on the ingredients label? No mater what kind of drugs they pump into the cow that your hamburger is coming from, it’s always just going to be labeled beef. How about that bottle of water that you’re drinking from right now? It’s just water, or is it? A salmon from Lake Ontario is still just salmon, even if it’s full of PCBs (at least you can’t buy those in the grocery store). There’s a lot of stuff in our food and water that we don’t know about, which is why Washington, DC based Food & Water Watch exists. They’re “a nonprofit consumer organization that works to ensure clean water and safe food.”

I’m in the lucky position of having a girlfriend who has an 8 year old sister. That means that I have a built in excuse to continue to do “kid things,” even though I’m way too old to do them on my own without seeming creepy. Mini golf and bowling are certainly staples, although it’s not too weird for 20-somethings to do those (bowling with bumpers is another story), but one of my favorites is going to children’s museums. Not only do they provide a lot of fun, but they also always seem to teach me something. It’s amazing to see complex concepts explained with simple exhibits and toys. I also particularly enjoyed the “screaming booth” at one museum because I was able to max out the decibel meter. Now, the Boston Children’s Museum may or may not have a screaming booth, I don’t know, but they do have some exciting internships for college students. That means that you can have a built in excuse to continue to do “kid things” just like I do.

Look at the auto industry. You can blame the downfall of the Big 3 on a lot of things, but a lack of innovation has to be a big part of your argument. Back when I was doing research on Seth Godin’s internship offerings, I came a blog called Joel on Software. I quickly noticed that Joel’s company, Fog Creek Software, had internships in New York City, and with a little more research I found out that they’re some of the hottest internships out there. Fog Creek’s Summer internships fill up fast, so I had to wait until now to tell you about them. Fog Creek is now accepting and reviewing applications for 2009! Fog Creek is all about recruiting the top 1%, and they do internships exactly how they should be done. Even if you’re not interested in software development internships, read this article by Joel Spolsky on Fog Creek’s internship program. “Unpaid internship” isn’t in his vocabulary.

I hate gossip mags. I really do, but I know that there are a ton of you out there who love them – whether you’re willing to admit it publicly or not. Maybe I’ve started too many posts like this, but I was doing my daily scan of Twitter for interesting internships when I came across a tweet from @bethcromwell about StrategyOne internships. I clicked the link and was surprised to end up on the website of Edelman. Apparently StrategyOne is a part of Edelman, so I decided to take a look at Edelman’s entire internship program. Edelman is a huge PR firm. They have 3,100 employees across 51 worldwide offices. They were voted PRWeek’s Large Agency of the Year for 2008 because of their position as a thought leader in new and social media. It’s cool to see the big guys as early adopters, so that’s why we think an internship with Edelman might be worth considering. It’d also be worth considering because Edelman is the PR Agency that was behind the launches of Halo 3 and Adobe CS3. Sweet!

As this site grows, we get pitched more and more by companies and organizations asking us to feature their internships. Last week I got an e-mail from a woman who is a Public Affairs Associate at The Cleveland Foundation. Since non-profits usually pitch me with good internships, I was excited to see what the Foundation has to offer. As I suspected, The Cleveland Foundation has a top notch internship program; in fact, other organizations are modeling their internship programs on it. Before we get into the specifics though, you should know that The Cleveland Foundation is “the world’s first community foundation and the nation’s third-largest today, with assets of $2.2 billion and annual grants nearing $85 million.” Everything that they do is with the intent of improving the lives of people who live in the Greater Cleveland area now and in the future. Most of what the Foundation does consists of raising money, making grants, and providing leadership on the vital issues facing Cleveland.

Yesterday we told you you about Trendrr’s internships, and while we were researching them, we stumbled upon the fact that their parent company, Wiredset, also offers internships. We considered cramming Wiredset and Trendrr’s internships into one post, but we thought that Wiredset looked cool enough to merit its own post. Wiredset is a digital marketing agency, which means that they offer services in four areas – online marketing, web production, measurement and metrics, and strategic consulting. Considering the fact that Wiredset’s client list includes Apple, ESPN, Comedy Central, MTV, and Microsoft, they must be pretty good at what they do. I can vouch that they certainly have their finger on the pulse of the web. Wiredset’s CEO Mark Ghuneim e-mailed me 7 minutes (seriously) after I posted about Trendrr to thank me for the post. Since today is World Usability Day, maybe it would have been better if we saved Hesketh’s internships for today. I guess we jumped the gun. Maybe if we had been watching trends a little more closely, we wouldn’t have missed the announcement. Ok, so maybe Trendrr wouldn’t have told us that today is World Usability Day, but it can tell us that the Yankees are more popular than the Mets (Duh!) and that… well… I don’t know exactly what it’s telling us about the NYC Pillow Fight’s Attendees. Trendrr pulls data from 14 categories (Blogs, Facebook, Finance, Jobs, Movies, News, Real Estate, Sales, Search Results, Social Networks, Tickets, Video, Weather, and Web Stats) and numerous sources to allow you to track all kinds of trends, whether they be as ridiculous as attendees at a pillow fight or as serious as the number of Indeed job listings in your city. It’s an insanely cool tool that I’m going to start using to watch some things that I currently use RSS to track.

As you may or may not know, every weekend we feature two non-profit organizations and their internships. That means that in addition to looking at corporate websites all week, we also spend a considerable amount of time looking at non-profit sites. Since companies are usually trying to sell someone something, their websites tend to be both nice to look at and easy to navigate/use (with a big exception for many of the Careers sections of these corporate sites). With the non-profits there’s more variability – some sites are stunning and easy to use, while others could use a lot of work. Non-profits may not be selling a product or service, but they still need to sell themselves to donors, volunteers, job seekers, and even the people whom they’re aiming to serve. That means that design and usability isn’t something that they can ignore, and that’s why Hesketh, a user experience agency, “has developed practices and services that are specifically attuned to challenges faced by non-profits, higher education, member-based associations, and other organizations committed to socioeconomic development.” They serve corporate clients too, but Hesketh seems to be carving out a pretty cool niche for themselves (they’ve also literally carved out a new, old niche for themselves recently).

It’s been a while since we’ve featured any government internships, and with today’s being Veteran’s Day, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to take a look at what kind of internships you can get at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Before you get in to internship searching mode, though, go thank a veteran. If your grandfather served in World War II, give him a call and say thank you. Or if one of your buddies has served or is serving in Iraq, shoot him or her an e-mail stating your appreciation. And if any of you job searchers out there happen to be veterans, thank you from the One Day, One Internship team. Now let’s get into what the VA is all about. There are 25 million veterans currently living in the United States and 70 million people who are “potentially eligible for VA benefits and services because they are veterans, family members or survivors of veterans.” The VA is responsible for providing top-flight patient care and administering veterans’ benefits. Our vets have risked their lives to earn the services offered by the VA, so it’s important that the VA has a talented staff that is committed to providing top-flight “customer” service.

Sea Turtle Restoration Project Logo

One of the cooler fly fishing moments that I’ve had was sea turtle related. I was in Costa Rica fishing for sailfish when we trolled past a couple of sea turtles. Immediately a dorado (aka mahi mahi aka dolphin fish) came out from below the sea turtles (they love hanging out under debris… or turtles) and started chasing the hookless plugs that we had let out behind the boat. We teased the fish in to the boat, I cast my fly to it, hooked it, and caught it after an amazing battle. It was a perfect example of how ecosystems work with the fish using turtles as cover to ambush prey. Unfortunately, our experience with sea turtles from the previous year’s trip wasn’t so heartwarming, as another boat from our party came across a turtle that had been tangled in commercial fishing long lines (nothing like what sport fishermen use). Luckily they were able to get the turtle in the boat and cut it free from the tangle of lines, but it was a reminder of how many risks sea turtles are facing out in the wild (see below for a picture of the turtle as it was being rescued). The Sea Turtle Restoration Project is a non-profit organization that is trying to protect sea turtles from these threats of pollution, coastal development, commercial fishing long lines, and shrimping nets.

I’m intrigued by the idea of non-profits for non-profits. Whether we’re talking about a major Fortune 500 corporation or a tiny 2 person non-profit, every organization relies on other organizations to achieve its mission. Nobody can do everything in-house, so it makes sense that some non-profit organizations exist solely to help other non-profits. The Nonprofit Quarterly may not provide a service that other non-profits rely on, but they do provide information that informs non-profit leaders how to act more effectively. Or as The Nonprofit Quarterly puts it, they “promote spirited nonprofit management.” They also differ with us on whether the word “non-profit” should be hyphenated. Considering that college is a time when you’re supposed to be working towards having a productive adulthood, a whole lot of self-destruction seems to be going on. It must be hard for the health nuts to fit in. If you prefer 8 glasses of water a day to keg stands, celery sticks to buffalo wings, and the Nintendo Wii to the Xbox, then you’ll be a lot more comfortable in an internship at Rodale than you will be at a frat party. Rodale is a “global media company with a heritage, mission, and authority dedicated to the health and wellness of the individual, community, and planet.” They publish magazines such as Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Organic Gardening, Prevention, and Runner’s World. They’re also the largest independent book publisher in the U.S.

Figuring out what you’re going to do after school is scary. If you’re an artist (of any kind), figuring out what you’re going to after school is absolutely terrifying. Why is that? Because to be successful in the arts, you need to take risks. Nobody enjoys painters, musicians, or actors who play it safe. People want art to push their limits. Ars Nova is New York City’s “premier hub for emerging artists and new work.” They encourage young people to push the limits of art, and they do so by giving them a place to perform and by “developing and producing eclectic theater, comedy and music to feed today’s popular culture.” If you’re a performing artist, then Ars nova might be a place that you want to look at as you plan your future. If you’re not a performing artist, but love the performing arts, then you might want to consider an internship with Ars Nova.

Now that we have a whole new slate of elected officials, it’s time to figure out how we’re going to put them to work for us. One great idea on how to get our suggestions out (besides voting of course) is PolicyPitch, a website that lets you introduce “new ideas and policies at the neighborhood, city, and state levels.” In other words, say that you have a 4 foot deep pothole on your street that you want fixed. You can submit that idea, and other people (who presumably live on or drive on your street often) can vote your idea up. Hopefully PolicyPitch will gain enough traction that government officials will start listening and responding to these idea submissions. That’s the key to success for PolicyPitch, and that’s why they’re looking to add interns to their numbers (all 2 of them).

Happy Election Day! I’m not going to urge you to vote like most other people will, because yesterday I learned that “It’s more likely that you will be killed driving to the polling booth than it is that your vote will change the outcome.” That’d be a lot to have on my conscience, so I’m going to say vote at your own risk. If you’re upset that I’m making a mockery of the political system, then today’s company isn’t for you. That’s because we’re talking about The Onion and their internships. I can’t think of a more fitting company for election day (except for maybe Diebold, but they’re not nearly as much fun) than The Onion because politics and satire go hand in hand. Without politics satire is hamstrung, and without satire politics is utterly painful. The Onion is not only “America’s finest news source,” but also “the funniest publication in the US” according to the New Yorker.

It’s been almost 9 months since we officially launched, and in that time we’ve featured quite a few internships in public relations. Many have been in-house with major brands, while others have been on the consulting/agency side. When you’re looking at in-house internships, it’s easy to find the point of differentiation – it’s all in the product or service that you’re trying to get press for; however, it’s not so easy to differentiate between internships at different PR agencies. If you’re like Derek Zoolander and can’t turn left, then a career as a NASCAR driver probably isn’t in the cards for you; however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t work for the the country’s 2nd most popular sports league (based on television ratings). Some may debate whether NASCAR is a sport or not, but nobody can debate its popularity. It’s huge. I’ve never watched more than 5 minutes of a NASCAR race, so I’m not the guy to sell you on NASCAR, but I do know that it’s a hell of a business. The league made $3 billion in profit last year, and they apparently share some of it by paying their interns.
