I use a credit/debit card for almost all of my purchases. It makes it extremely easy to track where, when, and how I spend my money. I actually get annoyed when I have to pay cash. Unsurprisingly, I’m not the only one who likes to collect data on my purchases. Pretty much every business that could potentially sell me something would love to have more data about me. Datalogix is a company that collects that data. They are based in Westminster, CO, and they “leverage the power of purchase-based audience targeting to drive measurable online and offline sales.” They started by collecting offline purchase data, but now they’re mixing that data with online, direct mail, e-mail, and mobile. That’s an amazingly powerful combination.

There used to be three places that you could buy video advertisements: ABC, NBC, and CBS. Now there are millions. Nearly every website has the capability to sell video advertising, though very few have a team to sell the ads the way a tv station would (and that’s not even the best way to do it necessarily). SpotXchange is a Westminster, CO based company that makes buying and selling video advertising easy. In fact, they claim to have “the largest global marketplace of video ad inventory, reaching 110 million unique visitors each month in more than 35 countries.” It allows publishers and brands to link up that might never have connected without SpotXchange.

I was way ahead on the flash sales and members only shopping thing. I did a writeup on Gilt Groupe almost five years ago just as the business model was catching on. While there isn’t nearly as much excitement about the space as there used to be, it’s still a great way to sell stuff (time constraints and sales both have amazing psychological effects on people). And that’s why I think it’s worth taking a look at Rue La La. They’re a Boston, MA and New York, NY based company that curates “Boutiques filled with the best of the best in women’s and men’s fashion, home, travel, kids, and more.” Each sale lasts 48 hours and is limited to members only (though becoming a member is about as easy as signing up).

I have a favorite Yankees blog, and I occasionally participate in a Cornell Hockey forum. I follow a few athletes on Twitter, and sometimes get into sports debates on Facebook. I’d imagine that I’m a pretty typical sports fan in terms of my social media and web use–my attention is fragmented across a lot of different sites. LockerDome is a St. Louis, MO based startup that offers a social media platform to help “professional athletes, brands, media personalities, and other sports properties” reach their fans wherever they’re consuming content online. The idea is that LockerDome acts “as a social hub [for athletes and brands] to amplify their overall social media strategy.”

I swear that movies used to start on time and you had to come early to see the coming attractions. I’m probably misremembering, but we all know that what used to be a few quick previews now often lasts more than 15 minutes. There are trivia games (with sponsors of course), straight up commercials, trailers for movies that look horrible, and a few trailers that actually get you excited. Some see this as the cheapening of the moviegoing experience, and that’s exactly what it is–it keeps ticket prices down. National CineMedia is the company behind much of the pre-feature entertainment and advertising that you see in movie theaters. They’re based in Centennial, CO and publicly traded, though they’re also “owned and operated by the 3 largest theater circuits in America: Regal, AMC and Cinemark plus 36 select affiliate partners.”

I’m often asked how I’m able to consistently find interesting companies to cover. It’s all about what I call the always looking approach. If you open your eyes, you start to realize that your life is full of cues that can lead you to interesting employers. One of my favorite exercises is to walk around downtown Chicago and look at all of the billboards and signs. There’s always something new and interesting. But what about the company that makes the the signs? That’s Watchfire. They’re a Danville, IL based company that got its start as ” Time-O-Matic, an industry leader in innovations like the Time and Temperature signs that became landmarks at banks and downtown corner stores across the nation.” Now they’re in the business of LED signs of all shapes and sizes. A lot of people think that they’re not affected by outdoor advertising. I can almost guarantee that’s not true. One of Watchfire’s big products is the Price Watcher sign for gas stations. You can’t tell me that you don’t pick a gas station based on the prices shown on those signs!

I’m a sucker for reality tv. I hope this won’t make you think less of me, but my current favorites include Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, Pawn Stars, Hardcore Pawn, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Top Chef, Million Dollar Listing, and Storage Wars. I know I’m not alone because more and more of these shows are being put on the air. We’ve seen reality tv completely change the type of programming that a number of channels run. Bravo, A&E, and The History Channel are prime examples. The latter two are both part of A+E Networks, which is a New York, NY based “global media company with joint ventures and channels all over the world.” Their brands include A&E, Lifetime, HISTORY, LMN, BIO, H2, HISTORY en Español, Crime & Investigation Network, Military HISTORY, Lifetime Real Women, A&E IndieFilms, A+E Networks International, A+E Networks Digital, and A+E Networks Consumer Products. I’m sure you’ve watched at least one of them recently.

Here’s a fun exercise. Step back and think about every gift that you gave or asked for this holiday season. Now think about the marketing messages that affected those decisions. A lot of people seem to think that they’re impervious to most marketing tactics, but the stats say otherwise. That’s good news for companies like Engauge. They’re “a full-service marketing agency” that helps grow their “clients’ businesses by leveraging creativity and technology to connect brands and consumers through the most relevant content and channels.” They’re based in Atlanta, GA with offices in Columbus, OH, Orlando, FL, and Pittsburgh, PA. Engauge launched in 2007 and has already grown to nearly 300 people.

You’ve probably noticed that more and more celebrities are using their fame to launch businesses. This makes a ton of sense. Getting exposure for a new business is extremely difficult for regular people, but celebrities have a built-in PR machine. If what kind of shoes you wore is newsworthy, then the fact that you started a business (or even just lent your name to it) is going to get attention. Even a non-A-lister like Giuliana Rancic (E! News host, reality star and author) can have a distinct advantage whether she’s opening a restaurant in my neighborhood (RPM Italian) or launching a media site called FabFitFun (the name sounds like someone’s New Year’s Resolution). Today we’re going to focus on the latter, which is a Los Angeles, CA based company that offers “free daily emails filled with the latest and greatest in beauty, fitness, diet and wellness.”

Spotify

Bonobos is one of my favorite companies that I’ve written up. Right now they’re offering a free $50 gift card to new customers. Their awesome men’s clothing makes a great holiday gift, and it’s the kind of stuff that guys can wear to a new job.

This morning I learned that Audiogalaxy is being acquired by Dropbox. Audiogalaxy was the ultimate way to find and download awesome music back in the day. The experience that it offered back in the early 2000s was pretty remarkable, but they operated in a legal gray area and eventually had to drastically change their service. Today downloading is out and streaming is in. And if you’re streaming music, chances are that you’re using Spotify. The Swedish company launched its product in the US (their US headquarters is in New York, NY) about a year and a half ago and pretty much blew away the competition. While most streaming services offer a “radio” type experience, Spotify allows you to listen to any of their 20 million licensed songs whenever you want.

The Internet is the great equalizer. It’s where upstarts and big brands can go head to head. The big guys still have a massive advantage, but the truth is that transferring a luxury brand online isn’t all that easy. I feel intimidated when I walk into a fancy store, but I don’t even feel anything when I visit the same company’s website. Intimidation may not be what many brands go for, but exclusivity is. How do you maintain that image online while doing SEO, affiliate marketing, media buying, and more? Morpheus Media has the answer. They’re a New York, NY based “full-service provider of interactive marketing solutions to Fortune 500 companies and those aspiring to land on that list.” They seem to work mostly with fashion, luxury, entertainment, and media brands, and I think that makes them even more interesting.

I used to get excited about Black Friday, but never to the point that I’d actually join the crowds at the retail stores. I’d much rather search for deals online (though I barely do that anymore). While Cyber Monday used to be when e-commerce sites slashed their prices, it now seems that most of them have jumped on the Black Friday bandwagon. The nice thing about shopping online is that it’s really easy to see how good of a deal you’re actually getting. Shopzilla is a Los Angeles, CA based company that helps online shoppers do exactly that. They run a number of destination websites that “help shoppers shop and sellers sell.” Their network of sites reaches more than 40 million shoppers every month and helps them learn about more than 100 million products from thousands of retailers.

There’s about a 70% chance that you found us through Google. That’s by design. I’ve learned that search is by far the best way to reach job seekers, so I’ve invested a ton of time, money, and effort into my SEO strategy. So far I’ve done it mostly on my own (with the help of a few awesome interns), but if I ever get to the point where I need to hire an agency, I’ll look for one that is aligned with the people in the industry whom I trust. SEER Interactive definitely clears that hurdle (I’ve even heard their Founder called “quite brilliant” by one of the best in the industry). SEER Interactive is a Philadelphia, PA based online marketing agency that specializes in SEO, SEM, Analytics, and Conversion Optimization. I actually decided to take a closer look at SEER after I got a link request e-mail that they sent out for one of their clients. (Honestly, I think the the request could have been better, but it stood out from most of the crap I get.)

Two competing marketing campaigns that combined for more a billion dollars in ad spend just came to an end (and the result was maintenance of the status quo). Some would say that any money spent on advertising is wasted, but as someone who makes a living off of advertising, I disagree strongly. I’ll take a wager that the folks at Direct Agents are on my side. Direct Agents is a New York, NY based “digital marketing agency specializing in performance-based digital solutions including lead generation, email marketing, search engine marketing and Facebook advertising.” They must be doing a good job, as they’ve more than doubled their revenue since 2007 (to $34.3 million).

I’m kind of obsessed with subscription based business models right now. I’ve been trying to come up with some new ones on my own, but I’ve also been investigating those that are already out there. One non-obvious (at least to me) subscription offering that seems to be gaining a lot of traction is underwear. There are a number of players in the market, so it must mean that people like getting new pairs of underwear on a regular basis. One of these companies is Me Undies. They’re based in Beverly Hills, CA, and they offer “the world’s most comfortable underwear in all your favorite colors and styles.” Oh yeah, and they do it at a way better price than designers who offer underwear of the same quality.

I constantly get asked where I find all of the companies that I write about. The short answer is everywhere. But one of my favorite sources is you. You may be running short on ideas right now (that’s why you signed up for my e-mails), but things will change. You’ll get an internship, and hopefully you’ll report back where. That’s what one reader did, which is why I know about Ampush. They’re a San Francisco, CA based company that helps “advertisers leverage the scale and precision of the Facebook media platform to develop and engage their customer graph.” Facebook’s advertising options are amazingly powerful, but only if you know how to use them. I’ve toyed with buying ads, and it has never been ROI positive for me. Ampush combines knowhow with technology to helps make sure that their investment in Facebook advertising is worthwhile.
