Bender/Helper Impact

Bender/Helper Impact Logo

Public relations can be tough an industry to work in. As a PR professional, your job is to get people excited about your clients’ products, services, or news. That isn’t so easy when your client manufactures plungers or is laying off 10,000 workers. On the other hand, it can be a lot of fun when you have amazing clients who do things that you are genuinely excited about. Bender/Helper Impact is a PR and communications firm that works with some great clients in some pretty exciting industries. Their four areas of practice are: Entertainment Content, Entertainment Technology & Consumer Electronics, Interactive Entertainment, and Consumer Products. Just to give you a taste of what that means – they worked on the launches of video games like “Metal Gear Solid 2,” “Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex,” “Diablo II” and “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon.”

Rent Marketer Logo

Now, I usually write themed posts for holidays, but since today is only a holiday for me and those whom I force to celebrate (it’s my birthday), I don’t have a themed post. I will, however, be announcing a contest later today where we’ll be giving away an iPod touch in celebration of my birthday. We also have another great internship opportunity for you today. Last week, a woman named Stephanie Johnson from Rent Marketer e-mailed me and told me that she had “relied on One Day, One Internship (and Job) to get ideas about what a great internship looks like.” She wanted us to share the details internships with you, and since flattery works we’re telling you about it today. Rent Marketer is in the business of helping property owners post their rentals to dozens of sites all at once. Repeatedly posting For Rent ads can be mind numbing (kind of like applying to a lot of internships), and they do it all for you in a simple and cost effective way.

Independent Diplomat

by on October 4, 2008

Independent Diplomat Logo

Since diplomacy is “the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of groups or states” according to Wikipedia, one would assume that a diplomat is a representative of a group or state. Independent Diplomat is a non-profit organization that is trying to live outside that definition. Their mission is to provide the knowledge and experience of long time diplomats to countries that are disadvantaged or marginalized to the point that they don’t have the resources to effectively practice diplomacy. Started by a former British diplomat, Independent Diplomat has worked with nations that include Somaliland, Western Sahara, Kosovo, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to prevent and resolve conflict. They’re kind of like management consultants for diplomacy.

Are you always the guy or girl in charge of the music whenever your fraternity/sorority/house/dorm throws a party? Or are you always responsible for editing the video or doing the designs in our group projects? If you’re either of these two and always the life of the party, then a part-time internship with Fig Media Incorporated might be a great way to spend some of your time this or next semester. Fig Media is a Chicago based creative agency that offers deejay, photography, and video services. They’re all about making events awesome, and then providing media that allows you to remember how awesome they were for many years after.

Brant Publications

by on September 30, 2008

It’s not too uncommon for us to have trouble scrounging up details about a company’s internships despite the fact that we know that they have them; however, today’s situation is pretty unusual. We’re having no trouble finding information on internships with Brant Publications, but we’re having a heck of a time gathering information about the actual company. It’s not that they’re some stealth stage startup or a small boutique firm that nobody has ever heard of. They are the publisher of three well known magazines – The Magazine Antiques, Interview, and Art in America, but they don’t have a corporate website (or logo). Apparently, they do have a dress code, though. Despite the lack of publicly available information about Brant Publications online, we still think that their internships look pretty cool. If you’re dying to work in publishing or around the arts, you’ll probably be pretty excited about the internship opportunities that you’ll find below.

Internships at the Mystery Company

Brant Publications is currently looking to fill internships in Office Services, Human Resources, Advertising (Art in America), Advertising (The Magazine Antiques), Advertising (Interview Magazine), Art (Interview Magazine), Editorial (Interview Magazine), Editorial (The Magazine Antiques), Mailroom, Accounting, Fashion, and Production. All of the internships are located in New York City, and many have multiple openings. The job descriptions for each internship are pretty sparse, but the job titles are specific enough that you should get some idea of what they’ll expect you to be doing. The internship listings don’t say so explicitly, but we get the vibe that these are unpaid internships. You can apply online through the Magazine Publishers of America website where the links above will lead you. It’s not completely clear whether these are Fall, Spring, or Summer internships, but it seems that Brant hires a lot of interns, and probably does so year round.

City Slicker Farms

Two Sundays ago we wrote about internships with Smokey House Center, a farming cooperative and outdoor classroom in rural Vermont. Today we’re going to take a look at another agriculturally focused non-profit, but today’s organization is located in the heart of Oakland. That’s right, City Slicker Farms is all about urban farming. Their mission is to “increase food self-sufficiency in West Oakland by creating organic, sustainable, high-yield urban farms and back-yard gardens.” City Slicker Farms is all about enabling people to directly improve their own lives through agriculture. Not only does urban farming provide delicious, nutritious food at a low cost, but it also makes the urban landscape more livable.

Whole Child International

Whole Child International Logo

When I first heard the name Whole Child International, I was a bit perplexed. I usually take for granted the fact that children are whole. I quickly realized that they mean emotionally whole, not physically whole (although that is important too, I’m sure). Whole Child International is focused on working “in existing children’s institutions to improve the quality of care and help prevent the bleak outcomes that await most children raised in the world’s orphanages.” They first started in Nicaragua, but they are now in El Salvador too. Their goal is to help children in orphanages develop the basic psychological tools that they “need to succeed in school, work, relationships, and families of their own.” They have a distinctive model for institutional change that aims to directly affect the orphanage administration and caregivers so that they can better serve the children in their care.

Causecast

Causecast Logo

By featuring one internship every day, we like to think that we put internship related information in an easily digestible format. Causecast is trying to make finding cool causes easier by featuring ten every month. That’s just the start of it, though. They have a community/social networking aspect, and they also link non-profits with brands and celebrities. For exapmle, Generation Rescue is supported by Jenny McCarthy and sponsored by, well, it looks like Causecast is still working on the sponsorships. They use the power of Web 2.0 to collect a ton of relevant information on organizations, and they even provide an easy way to donate to the causes of your choice. You can see what the total donations from the Causecast community are to date, which is also cool. The community, so far, is still pretty small, but Causecast’s website is excellent and will certainly generate a lot more interest in the future.

Apparently there’s a shortage of Fall interns. We’re two weeks into September, but there are still a lot of companies that are having trouble filling their unpaid internships. Maybe college students are finally realizing that working for free is often kind of a bad deal. Don’t get us wrong, it is getting more and more difficult to find a variety of Fall internships to write about, but we’re quite surprised to still have plenty of opportunities to cover. One opportunity that we just came across is interning with Shape Magazine in New York City. They have quite a few internships

Live Nation

Live Nation Logo

Artists and record labels are starting to realize that live music is a great way to stay profitable. Although the digital download business is seeing amazing growth, the idea that people should pay for songs has pretty much gone out the window. If you can fill up a venue with adoring fans (who paid an arm and a leg for tickets) and sell them t-shirts, posters, and whatever else people buy at concerts, you can still make a lot of money. If this trend continues Live Nation should be primed for success, they have the “most live concerts, music venues and festivals in the world and the most comprehensive concert search engine on the web.”

PRWeek

PRWeek Logo

Working on the front lines seems to be the ideal for an internship. You want to get immersed in the industry that you hope to be working in after you graduate. For instance, if you’re studying public relations and want to work in public relations, then it seems like a good idea to get an internship doing public relations. There’s another option that can give you exposure to almost any industry, but it doesn’t include every day work in the field. You can intern with a trade publication that covers your industry of interest. Take PRWeek, for example. They’re currently looking for a Fall intern. The internship won’t put you on the front lines at a PR agency, but it will provide an immersion in the PR industry that you probably won’t get anywhere else.

Orphans International

by on September 7, 2008

Orphans International Logo

It’s hard for me to imagine growing up without parents. The closest that I ever came to being orphaned was when my mom lost me in Toys ‘R Us for no more than ten minutes. I was about six years old, and when I realized that I couldn’t find my mother, I lost all interest in the thousands of toys surrounding me and frantically ran from aisle to aisle looking for her. It’s amazing how terrifying it can be for a young child to be separated from his or her parents for a short time, which makes it hard to fathom the emotional distress that orphans must go through. Jim Luce could see this distress in the eyes of one boy in an Indonesian orphanage, so he adopted him. His adoption experience gave him the idea to start a surrogate foster care system in developing nations based on the concept of small homes with only four children and a house parent at each dwelling. He wanted to raise orphaned children from toddlers to adulthood the way he was raising his adopted son, so he did it and named his non-profit organization Orphans International. Jim Luce describes the process in a wonderful essay that he wrote for the New York Times.

Men’s Health Network

by on September 6, 2008

Men's Health Network Loo

To most college aged guys the words “men’s health” brings up images of jacked guys on a cover of a magazine that claims that it will help you “Lose Your Gut in 43 Days” and go on the “Red Hot Sex Safari.” Others might think of the retired athletes who now appear in commercials about prostate cancer, but for the most part 20-something males don’t think about health issues too much (and for good reason, most of us are completely healthy). I was taken aback when I started reading Adam Frey’s blog. Adam is a Cornell University (my alma mater) wrestler who competed in the NCAA championships this spring. A few days after his wrestling season finally ended, he was in a horrible car accident, but walked away from it mostly unscathed. He went to the hospital and had some precautionary tests done including a CAT scan. His body was completely unharmed from the accident, but that the doctors discovered that Adam had testicular cancer. Since his diagnosis Adam has been blogging nearly every day about his battle with cancer. His posts are inspirational, and his honesty is sometimes overwhelming. He is doing a fantastic job of bringing light to men’s health issues, much like the Men’s Health Network, which is a non-profit educational organization that aims to “significantly improve the health, longevity, and quality of life or men and their families.”

Sodahead

Sodahead Logo

Although crackheads are typically addicted to crack, sodaheads may or may not be addicted to soda. We’re not exactly sure what a sodahead is, but we know that the name implies someone who has ideas constantly bubbling out of his or her head. Sodahead is a social network for these people. It allows users to ask and answer poll questions and to discuss those answers with other people who have similar interests. You can discuss the questions on Sodahead.com, or you can take the questions with you in the form of a widget to your blog or MySpace page. There are plenty of serious survey and polling tools online, but Sodahead tries to bring a little fun by allowing users to embed multimedia in their polls. We’d say that Sodahead is more focused on creating entertainment value than promoting data collection.

September just came out of nowhere, and now it seems like students across the country have already started their Fall internships. Since interning in the fall is usually a little more casual than a Summer internship, there’s still a good chance that you can pick up a last minute fall internship in the next few weeks. We’re going to start shifting our focus towards Winter, Spring, and even Summer internships, but if we see great Fall opportunities, we’ll be sure to post about them. That’s what we’re doing today. Bark Bark is a commercial production firm that is looking for Fall interns in the Atlanta area.

I bet that you have some friends whom you can listen to for hours – friends who can straight up tell a story. Whenever they speak, people listen. I bet that you also have friends (or quite possibly professors) who can make any story boring, no matter how good the facts of the story actually are. Storytelling is an art, but it’s also a skill that can be learned. It’s essential to making friends, getting internships, and persuading people. Everybody loves a good storyteller, and that’s why StoryCorps, an independent non-profit, is focused on honoring and celebrating people’s lives through listening. Here’s the story on StoryCorps and their internship opportunities.

AFS

AFS Logo

After only two years away at college, my family decided to replace me. My sister wanted a new brother, and my parents wanted a new son, so they decided to host an exchange student. They had heard good things about AFS, and our high school had typically hosted an AFS student every other year, so they looked through the book of students whom they thought would be a good fit with our family and picked one from Italy. Luca was a great addition to our family, even if he was supposed to be my replacement. We had a great time with him, and learned a lot. I’m not sure that we did much to achieve AFS’s goal of “building a more just and peaceful world through international student exchange,” but we certainly enjoyed the experience.

Are you constantly bruised, scraped, and loaded with adrenaline? If so, it’s pretty likely that you’re a reader of one of Transworld’s magazines – Surf, Skateboarding, Snowboarding, RIDEbmx, Motocross, Quad Off-Road, or Business when you’re taking some time to heal up before your next extreme adventure. Transworld has readership of over 4 million across these titles, which is surprising since you’d think most action sports enthusiasts would be too busy trying to break their next bone to sit down and read a magazine. With 7 great titles and a strong online presence, Transworld is a major player in extreme sports media. They don’t have a unified internship program, but we’ve done some research to try to identify what kind of internships you might be able to snag with each of their magazines.

American Documentary

by on August 24, 2008

P.O.V. Logo

It seems to me that most college students reduce their TV watching when they get to college – at least the ones who don’t have cable in their dorm room. There are too many other things that you either have to do or want to do, so watching tv moves down the list. Still, communal dorm TVs get pretty crowded during primetime. I mostly used the TVs for watching sports, and trying to watch a Yankees game on a “good” TV night often required that I walk down a few floors to find a group of fellow fans who were already watching. Not once in my TV hopping did I come across any of my peers watching something with educational value. Had I been hoping to watch something like the shows produced by American Documentary, I probably would have been out of luck. If you are one of the kids who usurps the communal TVs and ensures that you get your weekly fix of PBS, then an internship with AmDoc might be a great way for you to spend part of your Fall. If you’re one of those kids watching primetime TV or ignoring TV for the better things in college life, but you still love PBS, you’d also make a great intern at AmDoc.

Four summers ago I had the pleasure of interning for Jill Weinberg, Midwest Region Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, or USHMM for short. Admittedly, my job consisted of a lot of clerical work. I became remarkably familiar with Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and the paper cuts that you get on your tongue from licking envelopes over and over again; however, I also gained unforgettable knowledge and experience relating to crimes against humanity and genocide, both historical and current. The internship opened my eyes to world events, introduced me to compassionate and intelligent people, and gave me an excellent taste of what it is like to work for a non-profit, charitable company.

We Americans seem to love picking up on Japanese culture and making it part of our own popular culture. Karate, sushi, and video games are excellent examples of things that we’ve adapted in our own way into our everyday lives. Manga and anime haven’t quite had such wide adoption (except for Pokemon), but there seems to be a large group of fanatics who are absolutely obsessed with Japanese animation and graphic novels. Today’s internships are for those people. VIZ Media, owned by three of Japan’s largest creators and licensors of manga and animation, is “a leader in the publishing and distribution of Japanese manga for English speaking audiences.” When it comes to publishing, animation, and entertainment licensing of Japanese content, VIZ Media is the company. They publish magazines and graphic novels, produce DVDs, and develop, market, license, and distribute animated entertainment for those of us who consider Japanese a foreign language.

You have to love a company whose founder is willing to admit he was wrong. Ahmet Ertegun, the guy who started Atlantic Records, once said, “I honestly never imagined I would be able to make a living doing something that was so much fun. I am very glad I was wrong.” Things may have changed at Atlantic Records – rhythm & blues, rock and roll, and jazz have certainly given way to hip hop, punk, and pop in terms of popularity, but you still have to imagine that it’s unbelievably fun to work with the biggest names in music. Atlantic’s artist list is ridiculously impressive with something for nearly everyone.

I don’t know about you, but in the relatively short time that I’ve been politically aware, I’ve become very skeptical of politicians. It seems that they spend most of their time begging for money – or fundraising as they like to call it – so that they can win their race and get the power to decide what to do with the money that we are forced to give them through taxes. I’m further confused by the fact that I can’t give a Senator money (read: bribe) to get a bill passed, but if I throw him a fundraiser and pay a lobbyist to “lobby” him to get a bill passed, it’s ok. If this bothers you too, an internship with MAPLight.org is a great way to do something about it. The MAP in MAPLight stands for Money And Politics. They provide a website that “brings together campaign contributions and how legislators vote, providing an unprecedented window into the connections between money and politics.”

How do you make any sport better? Put the word “arena” in front of it! Arena Soccer, arena badminton, arena fishing, arena skydiving… you get the idea. Putting “arena” in front of a sport’s name is only second to putting “extreme” in front of it. Well one of the sports that actually works (not necessarily better) in an arena is football. The Arena Football League is exciting to watch and offers an option for the football junkies who are bored to tears in the offseason. Getting an internship in sports can be tough, and getting an internship with a team in a major sports league can be near impossible. Sometimes looking to the secondary leagues (sorry AFL) can offer great alternatives.
