Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Logo

I grew up in a house next to a post office. This was the ultimate location for a lemonade stand. From 11 AM to about 1:30 PM people would take their lunch breaks and stop by to pick up their mail. They couldn’t resist my cute face and amazing pitch for a nice, cold glass of lemonade. I raked it in, and I hoarded my earnings (and never paid my parents for ingredients). My intent wasn’t nearly as noble as Alex Scott, a 4-year-old who “announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer” in 2000. At the time she was in the middle of a fight against neuroblastoma, and she wanted to do everything that she could to help other kids facing a similar struggle. That lemonade stand grew into a movement called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is now a Wynnewood, PA based non-profit. Alex passed away in 2004 at the age of 8 having raised over $1 million to cure pediatric cancers. That’s an amazing accomplishment that becomes even more amazing when you see what her lemonade stand has grown into.

I’m going to a wedding this weekend. I’ll wear the same black Bonobos suit that I wear to every wedding. All I have to think about is what tie to wear. I’d never even consider buying a new outfit for a wedding other than my own or one I’m in. But it’s not an uncommon thing for a lot of women to wear a different dress to every wedding they go to. I don’t hide the fact that I’m skeptical of social media marketing. I was an early adopter, and it never really paid off for me. Still, I see tons of major brands investing heavily in social. They’re not stupid, so whether they’re hedging or actually getting a good return, social media marketing is going to keep growing. Since it’s such a new field, it’s a great industry for young people to make a name for themselves. That’s exactly what Aseem Badshah has done. When he was 16 he started a site called ThinkEssay.com “where students could post their schoolwork – such as essays, term papers, class notes, lab reports, and presentations – to provide inspiration and resources for other students.” That’s how he got his social media street cred. After he graduated from the University of Washington in 2010 he started Uptown Treehouse, a Bellevue, WA based (but they appear to be growing a team in Los Angeles) “full service marketing agency that helps brands meet their goals by leveraging social media to connect with current and potential customers.”

I constantly get asked where I find all of the companies that I write about. The short answer is everywhere. But one of my favorite sources is you. You may be running short on ideas right now (that’s why you signed up for my e-mails), but things will change. You’ll get an internship, and hopefully you’ll report back where. That’s what one reader did, which is why I know about Ampush. They’re a San Francisco, CA based company that helps “advertisers leverage the scale and precision of the Facebook media platform to develop and engage their customer graph.” Facebook’s advertising options are amazingly powerful, but only if you know how to use them. I’ve toyed with buying ads, and it has never been ROI positive for me. Ampush combines knowhow with technology to helps make sure that their investment in Facebook advertising is worthwhile.

I have a lot of shoes for a guy, but nearly every pair has a unique, functional purpose. I may double up in a few key areas, but I only look to buy new shoes when I have a specific need. I’m not one of those people who is constantly looking for an excuse to buy a new pair of shoes, but I know that there are lot of those types out there–and they tend to be female. ShoeDazzle is a Santa Monica, CA based company that was built to feed the addiction without draining your pocketbook. ShoeDazzle’s “Chief Fashion Stylist” is Kim Kardashian, which is great because the kind of person who dots her i’s with hearts is the kind of person you want helping you pick out shoes.

I can’t tell you how many hours I spent watching infomercials when I was a kid. I’d watch the same ones over and over even though they offered (questionable) solutions to problems that were completely irrelevant to a 9 year old. I have no explanation for why I’d watch them, but it’s a testament to the power of content marketing. When you make your advertisement the main event instead of an interruption, it suddenly becomes way more interesting. An infomercial is both the best and worst example of this. The content isn’t all that compelling, but the marketing message is very direct. Magnet Media is a company that helps brands lean towards the other end of the spectrum. They’re based in New York, NY, and they “specialize in telling the brand’s story by producing and syndicating compelling video and interactive content, using social platforms to help brands share their story, reach and engage their target audiences, and ultimately drive actions that deliver on business results.”

DramaFever

This Gangnam Style craze is kind of ridiculous, right? I originally saw the video in July and found it pretty amusing, but didn’t think much more of it. A couple months later it has over a quarter billion views on YouTube. I’m not sure if the interest will carry over into other Korean entertainment acts, but if it does, DramaFever is extremely well positioned. They are a New York, NY based company that gives “you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world.” Their original focus was on Korean dramas, but they are rapidly expanding their offerings of tv shows and movies from Taiwan, China, Singapore and the Philippines. Bollywood films and latin telenovelas will come next. What’s interesting about DramaFever is that they target their content toward English speaking audiences, so it’s not just about giving expats the content that they miss from home.

I used to be a big proponent of social media, but it keeps getting harder for me to see it as anything but a waste of time. Maybe that’s going a little too far, but I’m at the point where I’m overwhelmed by the endless flow of mostly irrelevant information. I need filters! Depending on what I’m trying to accomplish at a given time, my interest in social content can vary greatly. Spindle is a company that is building “the discovery engine for the social web.” They’re based in Boston, MA and they find “the most relevant and useful social content from shops, restaurants, bars, event venues, museums, art galleries, parks, and other businesses and organizations around you.” It’s only one piece of the puzzle, but when I’m looking for somewhere interesting to go or something fun to do, I’d love to use social data to see what’s out there.

I don’t know if being a nerd has ever been cooler than it is now. As technology becomes more approachable, so do the people who make it. It’s even come to the point where kids who are anything but nerds are self-identifying as nerds by posting pictures of themselves wearing glasses on Instagram. They can call themselves whatever they want, but real nerds make stuff. That’s exactly what the nerds at The Nerdery do. The Nerdery is a Bloomington, MN based company (they also have an office in Chicago, IL) that partners “with creative minds and big thinkers to engineer and build award-winning interactive projects.” They’ve also managed to win a few awards for themselves including being named to the Inc. 5000 for five years in a row. This year they only came in at #1,041 with 305% three-year growth to $26.2 million in revenue. That’s ridiculously impressive.

There’s a two in three chance that you found out about us from Google. That’s not by luck. Early on I realized that most job seekers don’t know where to look, so they go to search engines. I’ve put in a massive amount of work to ensure that the content that I create turns up when people search for stuff that I have answers for. This is called SEO, and it isn’t some sort of black magic–shortcuts don’t work in the long run. SEO and inbound marketing are about developing great content, organizing the information on your website in a coherent way, and getting other people to share it (mainly through linking). It’s a fascinating field that sometimes gets a bad reputation. I pass up writing about a lot of companies in the SEO industry because they don’t pass my smell test. Slingshot SEO does, and they also happen to have achieved a three-year growth rate of 2,391%–putting them at #136 on the Inc. 500. I really like what I see in Slingshot SEO’s methodology, and I’m also impressed by the Indianapolis, IN based company’s client list.

Let’s be honest. Your social media streams aren’t worth much. They may be valuable to your close friends and family (who aren’t even paying to access them), but they’re really just a way for big companies to collect information on you so that they can show you slightly more targeted advertising. It’s a little depressing, but there’s hope. Your social media activity may have an effect on big decisions if the people at Dataminr get their way. They’re a New York, NY based company that is transforming “social media streams into actionable signals for clients in the financial and government sectors.” The goal is to provide “one of the earliest warning systems for market-relevant information, noteworthy events and emerging trends.” You sill won’t be special in the eyes of Dataminr and their clients, but at least you’ll be part of something a little more meaningful than advertising.

I saw The Dark Knight Rises on Sunday. It was awesome. I only go to 2 or 3 movies a year, but I’d totally see this one again. Thankfully Christopher Nolan decided against having Batman in 3D (I absolutely hate 3D movies–they make my head hurt), and chose IMAX as a superior alternative. If I’m going to see it again, I might as well get the full IMAX experience. For those of you who don’t know, Wikipedia describes IMAX as “a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards” that “has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems.” IMAX is also the name of the company behind the technology. They’re based in Mississauga, Ontario, but they have some U.S. based jobs and internships, so I thought they were worth looking at.

There’s no time that sports apparel gets more attention than during the Olympics. There are the crazy “barracuda skin” racing suits for the swimmers, the bejeweled leotards for the gymnasts, and the ever controversial bikinis (or pants and long sleeved shirts if it’s under 60 degrees) for the women’s beach volleyball players. One might think that every uniform is chosen to maximize physical performance, but there’s research to show that what you wear/how you look affects your mental performance (See: Red is a winning color – GO BIG RED!). While they might not be outfitting our Olympians, GTM Sportswear is a Manhattan, KS based company that helps athletes perform better by looking better. They specialize “in providing custom-embellished uniforms, warm-ups, and practice apparel for college, school, and club sports teams nationwide.”

I’ve been pretty lazy in terms of fashion lately. It’s been ridiculously hot in Chicago, and I have no interest in wearing anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I can get away with it because I usually work from home, but if I didn’t I might go to Chictopia for inspiration. I know Chictopia, which is based in San Francisco, CA, sounds like a place that a 14 year old boy circa 1992 would dream of, but it’s actually “the ultimate online destination for trendsetters to be inspired, socialize, and share in fashion.” It’s certainly targeted more towards women than men, but they do have stuff for the guys (it’s chic as is in “sheek” not “chick,” I think). The end goal is to “democratize fashion by giving everyone a voice.”

Yesterday I touted the fact that WWF directs 85% of their expenses towards programming. If you’re like me, you probably wondered where the rest goes. 11% of it goes to Fundraising/Development. That’s a pretty big chunk, but it’s by no means uncommon in the non-profit world. Organizations need money to keep running, and it takes money to raise money (this makes getting a non-profit started a huge task). Many non-profits end up spending their money by hiring Sanky Communications, which is a New York, NY based company that “has launched or expanded successful marketing programs for more than 100 nonprofit organizations.” They do this through two businesses: SankyDirect and SankyNet. The former “offers a wide range of direct mail fundraising services” while the latter is “an online marketing agency made up of dedicated Web specialists, developers, and strategists with decades of combined experience advancing nonprofit work.”

One day I aspire to have so much money that I don’t know where it all is. I’m not talking about having random $20 bills in some of my pants pockets–I mean having all kinds of financial accounts all over the place. ByAllAccounts is a Woburn, MA company that has developed a technology solution that can aggregate “account data from virtually any online financial source.” That means that they’re able to “provide transaction level detail, data quality, and custodian coverage specifically required for professional wealth managers and financial advisors.” ByAllAccounts isn’t magic–it can’t find every account that a person has–but once you link accounts in, it’s able to keep pulling in data to provide a continuous feed of the activity across all accounts.

I’ve been hesitant to step into the world of virtual assistants. I like the idea of having people do stuff for me, but I’m not sure what I’d have them do. I just feel like I’ll spend more time explaining to the person how I want something done than it would take for me to do it on my own. I know I’m wrong. One of the most impressive things about the United States is how much we do for the rest of the world. We may do our fair share of messing things up and meddling in other people’s business, but the amount of aid that comes out of this country is truly remarkable. There are all kinds of organizations that are doing a variety of things to help the developing world. Many of these organizations are members of InterAction, a Washington, DC based non-profit that “seeks to shape important policy decisions on relief and long term development issues, including foreign assistance, the environment, women, health, education and agriculture.” They represent more than 190 member organizations that combine to do work in nearly every developing country. All of InterAction’s member organizations share the goal of a “peaceful, just and prosperous world of nations with inclusive and sustainable societies.”

One of my favorite parts of running this business is the online marketing. There’s something really exciting about coming up with new and better ways to reach more people. I came in knowing nothing about the topic, and I learned it all on the fly–there are essentially no barriers to entry for a college student who wants to get into the field (which is what I basically was 5 years ago). While I’m not sure it’s the resource I’d recommend to get started with, eMarketer is a fantastic place to start digging deep into the field. They’re a New York, NY based company that “publishes data, analysis and insights on digital marketing, media and commerce.” They’ve been doing it for more than 10 years, and in that time a lot of big names (Google, MTV, and GM to name a few) have come to trust them as a key resource for the most up to date information.

I had some pretty awesome after-school activities when I was a kid. I played baseball and basketball, but I also did some sort of space/science class and participated in Odyssey of the Mind. Then there was the time on the computer, which didn’t seem all that important, but ended up shaping my career. Time out of school can be extremely important for educational outcomes, which is why BOOST Collaborative exists. They are a San Diego, CA based non-profit that “is committed to creating opportunities for change in educational and social services agencies serving youth in the out-of-school time hours.” While most organizations in this space focus on working directly with kids, BOOST Collaborative focuses on working with the people who work with kids.

When I was a kid, I was a sucker for infomercials. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings and learn all about amazing products like Colorcoat 2000, Ab Flex, Brown N Crisp, and, my favorite, The Flying Lure. Excluding the latter, these products all solved problems that I didn’t have, but I was still fascinated by them. I wish I could say it was because of my early love for marketing, but I was just a dumb kid who believed all of the outrageous claims. If I really wanted to learn about marketing and selling products on tv, I should have been watching HSN. The St. Petersburg, FL based company has built an amazing business by selling all kinds of things to people who are sitting on their couch. While infomercial hucksters have been burning people with products that don’t work, HSN has been cultivating relationships with loyal customers.

Getting “premium channels” was the ultimate status symbol when I was a kid. Luckily, I had the parents who cut the cable for a few years. When we did get cable back, somehow the cable company accidentally added HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime. Maybe it was some promotion, but I am 100% certain that my Dad would have canceled the whole thing again if he saw a charge for them on the bill. Back then it was all about the movies on those channels, but original programming (and its lack of commercials) has become a bigger and bigger reason for people’s continued willingness to pay for the premiums. Showtime is based in New York, NY and has been around since 1976. It will be interesting to see how their business changes as people continue to consume more media over the Internet and less over traditional tv channels.

In case you haven’t noticed, content marketing is where it’s at. Whether you’re trying to reach new customers or increase engagement with current customers, your best bet is to offer them quality content that includes your messaging. Sounds easy.
