Blueleaf

by on August 21, 2012

Blueleaf Logo

There are some things in life that we want not because we actually want them, but because they are signs of having achieved something. Nobody actually wants a mortgage, but you’ll certainly feel like you’ve achieved something when you have one. Financial advisors fall into the same category. Paying someone to manage your money seems a little backward, but it’s a problem you want to have. And when you do have that “problem,” you want to have a financial advisor who is well equipped to help you make the best decisions for your future. Blueleaf is a Cambridge, MA based company that provides super simple software that helps financial advisors more easily communicate information to their clients. Blueleaf “simplifies tracking all your savings and long-term financial goals while making everything you own transparent, understandable, and controllable.”

1105 Media

1105 Media Logo

When you hear the word media, you usually think about exciting markets like sports, entertainment, and technology, but there are media businesses in nearly every niche that you can imagine. Business-to-business isn’t something that most college students and recent grads think about, but it’s an area with a ton of opportunity. 1105 Media is a company that “provides integrated business-to-business information and media” with a “focus on technology, products, policy, regulation, and news delivered through an assortment of media including print and online magazines, journals, and newsletters; seminars, conferences, executive summits, and trade shows; training and courseware; and web-based services.” It’s not the kind of content that you consume in your free time, but there are people who do, and they’re extremely valuable to reach. That’s why Chatsworth, CA based 1105 Media has a business that seems to be growing.

Collette Vacations

by on August 15, 2012

I need someone to help with a small PAID project/mini-internship. If you have WordPress experience, basic HTML skills, and excellent writing/editing ability, e-mail me today at willy@onedayonejob.com.

Collette Vacations Logo

For some people planning a vacation is better than going on a vacation. I wouldn’t go quite that far–especially because not having a plan can lead you to some pretty awesome things–but I like having control over what I do when I go on a trip. Others have a completely different approach. They want everything planned for them. They’re the kind of people who go on a trip with Collette Vacations, which is a Pawtucket, RI based company that offers “more than 150 expertly designed, escorted tours spanning 50-plus countries on all seven continents.” Collette Vacations was founded in 1918 and is still family owned and committed to creating “extraordinary travel experiences that fulfill the vacation dreams” of their clients.

IMAX

IMAX Logo

I saw The Dark Knight Rises on Sunday. It was awesome. I only go to 2 or 3 movies a year, but I’d totally see this one again. Thankfully Christopher Nolan decided against having Batman in 3D (I absolutely hate 3D movies–they make my head hurt), and chose IMAX as a superior alternative. If I’m going to see it again, I might as well get the full IMAX experience. For those of you who don’t know, Wikipedia describes IMAX as “a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards” that “has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems.” IMAX is also the name of the company behind the technology. They’re based in Mississauga, Ontario, but they have some U.S. based jobs and internships, so I thought they were worth looking at.

GTM Sportswear

by on August 7, 2012

GTM Sportswear Logo

There’s no time that sports apparel gets more attention than during the Olympics. There are the crazy “barracuda skin” racing suits for the swimmers, the bejeweled leotards for the gymnasts, and the ever controversial bikinis (or pants and long sleeved shirts if it’s under 60 degrees) for the women’s beach volleyball players. One might think that every uniform is chosen to maximize physical performance, but there’s research to show that what you wear/how you look affects your mental performance (See: Red is a winning color – GO BIG RED!). While they might not be outfitting our Olympians, GTM Sportswear is a Manhattan, KS based company that helps athletes perform better by looking better. They specialize “in providing custom-embellished uniforms, warm-ups, and practice apparel for college, school, and club sports teams nationwide.”

NewsCred

Newscred Logo

Sometimes a company knows that they’re on to something, but they can’t quite get it right at first. They have an idea, they build some technology, they hire some people, but the business doesn’t come together. That seems to have been the story with NewsCred for their first two iterations. Now it sounds like the New York, NY based company may have it figured out. After scrapping publisher ranking and a custom online newspaper engine, they’ve moved on to “sourcing and licensing trusted content across a broad range of subjects and perspectives.” Generating quality content is extremely hard. NewsCred allows the brands who need it to get it from the publishers who are experts at creating it.

Zulily

Zulily Logo

When people unsubscribe from these e-mails, the biggest complaint that I hear is that the jobs aren’t relevant (have you tried our search engine?). I understand that a single company every day isn’t enough for some people, but if you think our posts are just about the company that we’re covering that day, you’re missing a big part of ODOI’s value. Each day’s profile should be a jumping off point for your job search. So let’s say you really liked Totsy, but you want to be on the West Coast. Did you immediately start looking for competitors closer to where you want to be? If you had, you would have found Zulily, a Seattle, WA based company that offers “daily deals for moms, babies and kids.” It’s a pretty similar business, but it’s a completely different company. Even if you have no interest in either of these companies, you can use them as inspiration to find other interesting companies. For instance you could look up their investors, and see which other companies they’re investing in, or you could look at the products each site sells and research the companies that make them.

Chictopia

by on July 26, 2012

Chictopia Logo

I’ve been pretty lazy in terms of fashion lately. It’s been ridiculously hot in Chicago, and I have no interest in wearing anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I can get away with it because I usually work from home, but if I didn’t I might go to Chictopia for inspiration. I know Chictopia, which is based in San Francisco, CA, sounds like a place that a 14 year old boy circa 1992 would dream of, but it’s actually “the ultimate online destination for trendsetters to be inspired, socialize, and share in fashion.” It’s certainly targeted more towards women than men, but they do have stuff for the guys (it’s chic as is in “sheek” not “chick,” I think). The end goal is to “democratize fashion by giving everyone a voice.”

42Floors

by on July 24, 2012

42Floors Logo

Unhelpful Google results are often the sign of a business opportunity. I started One Day One Job because I was frustrated with the junk that turned up when I’d search things like “entry level jobs” (there’s still a lot of junk out there, but I’m doing my best to bring more quality to the results). Though I’ve never researched leasing an office, I hear that doing so is even more frustrating than looking for a job online. (I just searched for an office in my neighborhood, and the #1 result looks like it’s from 1995.) 42Floors is a company that wants to finally bring the $25 billion office space/commercial real estate market online in a proper way. They’re based in San Francisco, CA, which couldn’t be a better place for this kind of business to get its start (the Bay Area is the only market they cover right now).

Sanky Communications

by on July 23, 2012

Sanky Communications Logo

Yesterday I touted the fact that WWF directs 85% of their expenses towards programming. If you’re like me, you probably wondered where the rest goes. 11% of it goes to Fundraising/Development. That’s a pretty big chunk, but it’s by no means uncommon in the non-profit world. Organizations need money to keep running, and it takes money to raise money (this makes getting a non-profit started a huge task). Many non-profits end up spending their money by hiring Sanky Communications, which is a New York, NY based company that “has launched or expanded successful marketing programs for more than 100 nonprofit organizations.” They do this through two businesses: SankyDirect and SankyNet. The former “offers a wide range of direct mail fundraising services” while the latter is “an online marketing agency made up of dedicated Web specialists, developers, and strategists with decades of combined experience advancing nonprofit work.”

ByAllAccounts

ByAllAccounts Logo

One day I aspire to have so much money that I don’t know where it all is. I’m not talking about having random $20 bills in some of my pants pockets–I mean having all kinds of financial accounts all over the place. It’s a problem that we all want to have–and, yes, it can be a problem. It’s hard to manage your money and allocate your investments properly when you don’t have a grasp of where it all is. ByAllAccounts is a Woburn, MA company that has developed a technology solution that can aggregate “account data from virtually any online financial source.” That means that they’re able to “provide transaction level detail, data quality, and custodian coverage specifically required for professional wealth managers and financial advisors.” ByAllAccounts isn’t magic–it can’t find every account that a person has–but once you link accounts in, it’s able to keep pulling in data to provide a continuous feed of the activity across all accounts.

eMarketer

Have you tried our new internship search engine? Access thousands of company profiles and millions of jobs and internships sorted by relevance.

eMarketer Logo

One of my favorite parts of running this business is the online marketing. There’s something really exciting about coming up with new and better ways to reach more people. I came in knowing nothing about the topic, and I learned it all on the fly–there are essentially no barriers to entry for a college student who wants to get into the field (which is what I basically was 5 years ago). If you want to get into the field, start reading and then start doing (e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com if you want more direction on that). While I’m not sure it’s the resource I’d recommend to get started with, eMarketer is a fantastic place to start digging deep into the field. They’re a New York, NY based company that “publishes data, analysis and insights on digital marketing, media and commerce.” They’ve been doing it for more than 10 years, and in that time a lot of big names (Google, MTV, and GM to name a few) have come to trust them as a key resource for the most up to date information.

AmeriMark

by on July 11, 2012

AmeriMark Logo

A lot of companies that we feature are doing something innovative–they’re changing the way things work, and that can provide an amazing learning opportunity for a college student. But sometimes you can learn more from companies that do it the old fashioned way. I hate to say negative things about a company, but when I see the stuff that AmeriMark sells, I think thrift store. They position themselves as offering “a vast selection of quality, value-priced, brand-name merchandise,” so it’s really not far off. They sell “women’s apparel, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances and health-related merchandise” along with a lot of As Seen on TV products. Maybe I’m wrong, but this stuff doesn’t sell itself (though they do seem to put a really strong emphasis on quality). And that’s why I think Middleburg Heights, OH (Cleveland) based AmeriMark is so interesting. They know how to sell this stuff. They’ve been doing it since 1969, and they’ve used the same approach across both new and old mediums.

BOOST Collaborative

by on July 1, 2012

BOOST Collaborative Logo

I had some pretty awesome after-school activities when I was a kid. I played baseball and basketball, but I also did some sort of space/science class and participated in Odyssey of the Mind. Then there was the time on the computer, which didn’t seem all that important, but ended up shaping my career. Time out of school can be extremely important for educational outcomes, which is why BOOST Collaborative exists. They are a San Diego, CA based non-profit that “is committed to creating opportunities for change in educational and social services agencies serving youth in the out-of-school time hours.” While most organizations in this space focus on working directly with kids, BOOST Collaborative focuses on working with the people who work with kids.

BuildASign

BuildASign Logo

Sometimes a sign is the best marketing. It all started with paintings in caves and piles of rocks placed on trails, and we really haven’t moved too far beyond that. Yes, there has been some innovation in signs (video for instance), but many of the signs that are the most effective at grabbing people’s attention are pretty simple–just look at Burma-Shave or South of the Border. One of the most memorable signs that I’ve driven by is hand painted on rotting wood by some near Syracuse, NY. It ain’t pretty, but it gets its message across. Still, I don’t recommend that you follow that guy’s style guide. Instead you may want to check out BuildASign. They’re an Austin, TX based company that “has reinvented the way people buy signs” by offering an easy online interface for designing a sign and the ability to produce and ship finished products in days or even overnight.

HSN Logo

When I was a kid, I was a sucker for infomercials. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings and learn all about amazing products like Colorcoat 2000, Ab Flex, Brown N Crisp, and, my favorite, The Flying Lure. Excluding the latter, these products all solved problems that I didn’t have, but I was still fascinated by them. I wish I could say it was because of my early love for marketing, but I was just a dumb kid who believed all of the outrageous claims. If I really wanted to learn about marketing and selling products on tv, I should have been watching HSN. The St. Petersburg, FL based company has built an amazing business by selling all kinds of things to people who are sitting on their couch. While infomercial hucksters have been burning people with products that don’t work, HSN has been cultivating relationships with loyal customers.

Belly

Belly Logo

How many times have you received a punch card from a business to work your way towards some sort of free merchandise? How often have you actually held on to the card long enough to redeem it? The only time a punch card worked for me was when I was buying for a group and maxed out the whole thing at once. The obvious replacement for punchcards is a smartphone app, and Belly is a Chicago, IL based company that is making it easy for merchants to offer loyalty programs. The nice thing is that you only need one card/app for every merchant (as long as they use Belly). All you have to do is flash your card or a barcode from the app in front of the merchant’s Belly iPad and you’ll get credit for your visit.

Showtime

by on June 21, 2012

Showtime Logo

Getting “premium channels” was the ultimate status symbol when I was a kid. Luckily, I had the parents who cut the cable for a few years. When we did get cable back, somehow the cable company accidentally added HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime. Maybe it was some promotion, but I am 100% certain that my Dad would have canceled the whole thing again if he saw a charge for them on the bill. Back then it was all about the movies on those channels, but original programming (and its lack of commercials) has become a bigger and bigger reason for people’s continued willingness to pay for the premiums. Showtime is based in New York, NY and has been around since 1976. It will be interesting to see how their business changes as people continue to consume more media over the Internet and less over traditional tv channels.

In case you haven’t noticed, content marketing is where it’s at. Whether you’re trying to reach new customers or increase engagement with current customers, your best bet is to offer them quality content that includes your messaging. Sounds easy. But creating content that people will actually consume isn’t easy. Most companies aren’t very good at it. Sometimes they hire advertising or marketing agencies to do that, but many of them aren’t very good at it either. If they want to get serious, they should go to a “custom content agency ” like Imagination Publishing in Chicago, IL. They “work with Fortune 500 brands, associations and non-profit organizations to help create and strengthen relationships with their customers using quality, targeted content.”

Vittana

Vittana Logo

Education doesn’t have to be expensive, but it often is. In the U.S. we have a culture of financing education for people. Parents put aside college funds, colleges provide financial aid, private organizations offer scholarships, and there are all kind of student loans available. In much of the rest of the world, education is seen as a luxury. Vittana is a Seattle, WA based non-profit that is working to change that through microfinance. They “envision a world of opportunity, where educated minds and skillful hands work together to uplift the next generation, breaking the cycle of poverty.”

Publishers Clearing House Logo

When I was a kid I used to think that my parents were crazy for not opening the envelopes that told them that they “might already be a winner.” How can you not love the idea of someone showing up to your front door with balloons and a giant check? For some reason young people and old people get most excited for sweepstakes. I always knew that Publishers Clearing House gave away money, but I never understood the Port Washington, NY based company’s business model. It’s actually pretty simple. They’re in the business of direct marketing with a focus on magazine subscriptions. They offer a sweepstakes where purchasing doesn’t help your odds of winning at all, and use it to get attention. Attention is the first step in selling, and it’s hard not to get some when you give away millions of dollars in such an extravagant fashion.

Lifecrowd

Lifecrowd Logo

One of the best things to happen to me when I moved to Chicago was that I found a volleyball meetup group. It was a great way to make new friends, get exercise, and improve my skills. Another was when I stumbled on Jelly Chicago, a co-working group. I really lucked out with both. Finding fun group activities isn’t usually so easy–especially if your interests don’t align with the types of groups that already exist. Lifecrowd is a company that is trying to make social group activities happen more often. They’re based in Santa Monica, CA, and they’ve “developed a community to connect those who want to pursue trying new activities with Hosts who want to share their knowledge or skills with others.”

Betterment

Betterment Logo

After I graduated, I decided to get my finances in order. I cashed out savings bonds, combined bank accounts, and opened a Scottrade account so that I could start investing. This had obvious benefits, but it was also a project for me to work on during my job search. By analyzing investment ideas and managing a (very small) portfolio, I was developing new skills while giving myself something to talk about during job interviews. I highly recommend doing something like this yourself, but if it’s just not for you, you may want to take a look at Betterment. They’re a New York, NY based company that helps “people make smart decisions with their money.” Actually, I’m not sure if that’s a good way to put it. They make investing frictionless and take away any excuse that you’ve been using not to invest (besides the “I have absolutely no money to invest” excuse).

Today is my -1 year anniversary. In other words I’m getting married a year from today (and yes, we’re celebrating that). Amy and I have a wedding planner, and we’ve already made a lot of the big decisions (when/where/band/photographer). In a city like Chicago, you’re not going to get what you want if you don’t book things way in advance. Luckily, we have someone to guide us on these decisions, but if we didn’t we might turn to a resource like WeddingWire. It’s “the category leader in local business reviews (think “Yelp of Weddings”), offering the ability to search, compare and book over 200,000 recently reviewed wedding vendors.” The company is based in Bethesda, MD, and because they’ve been so successful in the wedding market, they’ve also gone after Bar Mitzvahs, Proms, and all kinds of other events.
